School Disco Query

So last night there was a PTA school disco KS2 (years 3-6) and DD duly went as she has been many times before. I collected her from a friend where the children were unhappy. I asked if they did not enjoy themselves. They told me the music was inappropriate (this is 10-11 year olds that were saying this). I asked what was played and was informed it was Gangsta music. Now having been a PTA chair some years ago I always strived to ensure music played at the school disco was always 'appropriate' and radio/clean edits. I feel like Gangsta is completely inappropriate for a Primary school disco but AIBU ..?

What were the actual songs? No one can comment on the suitability if the songs for Ks2 without knowing the songs. Your DD maybe describing appropriate songs that are not to her taste.

I agree with Jackshouse we need to know the songs that were played before commenting. I would be very surprised if they weren't appropriate and clean versions, it's more likely your daughter just didn't like them.

Lyrics included things..man not hot big shag.. .lots of the ‘f’ word. Mention of blades and guns...
I think that the genre of gangsta is not suitable for Primary School end of.

In which case it is definitely not suitable. Definitely time to have a chat with someone at school.

They played songs with the words big shag and fuck / fucking in them?

Sorry but I don't believe this for one second, no school would ever have songs like that on a school disco playlist for children of secondary school age, let alone 7-10 year olds. Hmm

MrsDroftaw · 25/01/2019 23:26

IceRebel although at school .. it was a PTA event so run by parents. My DD is in Y6 .. parents have compared ‘notes’ today and kids all saying the same. Definately Gangsta playlist which apparently is popular with kids (?!) I feel uncomfortable with that type of music at a primary school disco

The song mans not hot is by Big Shaq so it’s possible they mis-heard it for big shag!
However F words and guns/blades definitely not suitable for a school disco

It's def not appropriate. We have had a number of PTA discos over the past few years and we've been worried about an occasional swear word that hadn't been sensored on a CD for a Little Mix song. If it is the general consensus from parents that you are unhappy about their song choices, it may be worth having quick word with school to clarify. It will be learning point for PTA members for future disco's.
