Suitable age for mobile?

My dear daughter is 6yrs old, turns 7 next Sunday (27th) and for her birthday she wants a mobile phone so that she can watch gymnastics videos on YouTube.

But, I'm thinking that 6 or 7 is too young for mobiles so, do you guys/girls agree or am I being unreasonable?

My DD is 9 next month. She has asked for one. I've said no. Wait til high school, Y6 at a push.

I would then feel guilty that she wouldn't get to see the YouTube videos because we don't have laptops or ipad etc. But I do agree that she's too young for a mobile so, could I look into getting her an ipad?

DD had a pretty basic one for her 10th birthday but we’ve made it very clear it’s for texting & phoning. She uses her tablet a lot more actually. 7 is too young.

She really doesn’t need an iPad either.
Does your TV do YouTube?
Can’t she borrow your phone occasionally

My 8 year old has one, nothing flash/expensive. He just plays daft games and watches YouTube on it. As long as it's monitored I don't see the issue.

I think that it's too young for a phone. Kindle do kids tablets that are reasonable prices, have kids settings etc and come with a kid proof case! May be worth looking at those.

my dd is 11, she did not get a phone till she started secondary school, but she did have a laptop

Can I just ask why tablets and ipads are ok for young children and not a phone?

My 9 year old has a tablet (the same one they use at school) for homework, set by the school, educational games and occasional monitored free time..
No social media!

It is not used to call and text friends like a phone would be!

I'd rather we avoided all social media until at least high school. It's a nightmare.
My DD 9 has a tablet with kids controls on, for watching YouTube (monitored by me). She def does not need a phone.

Sounds like she's already watching those videos on something to be able to make the request. What's wrong with continuing on that? She doesn't need her own device at this age.
