Why is my toddler becoming hyper at bedtime?

2.4 DS. At 6.45 he goes up for a bath / wash and teeth brush, pyjamas on, two bedtime stories in his room in dim lighting, we say goodnight, he used to just go to sleep.

Last couple of weeks, he is up til 10 - 11 at night, singing, dancing, climbing in his toy box, emptying his toy box, needs a drink, lost his teddy, excuse after excuse.

He's not crying or calling after is.

His little eyes are so red and tired looking, and I'm starting to notice he looks constantly tired.

Typical routine
Monday - Wednesday - full day at nursery, naps for 1 hour 20 at about 1pm (always up by 2.30)
Thursday - Sunday - We go out somewhere in the morning, he'll have a nap for 1 hour 20 in the afternoon, sometimes to back out in afternoon or play at home

He can be sat listening to his stories, cuddled up, rubbing his eyes, and practically drifting off. The second we say goodnight and leave, it's like he's had a gallon of sugar!

Why?!?!

Mine did this at exactly the same age when she needed to drop her nap. We shortened the nap (would wake her up after 30 minutes) then just kept her awake altogether and that sorted it. She was exhausted for about 2 weeks but then back to normal and bedtime was a breeze again.
