Does anyone carry a toddler in a back carrier??

Hi, dh and i were out for our evening walk and once again dd went mad wanting to get out of the buggy. She is just over 13 months. we are thinking of getting one of those back carriers that holds the child up quite high so dh can carry her on walks. anyone use one?? advice/recommendations welcome

I used one until I got too pg to cope, I think ds1 was about 15m or so, and he is a very big lad. Wouldn't even dream of it at his current weight, but if he was lighter I would consider it expect I think he would have a strop if he wasn't allowed to walk by himself these days (2y). We took ds1 to a concert in one at the weekend, firsttime we've used one. He's 3.6. He loved it, and dh found it very easy, even with ds1 swaying and dancing in it!

It's great for walks and dd2 loves it.

I think they need to be good quality (like a backpack) so they don't put strain on your back. Ours is Kathmandu (we live in NZ, local brand) and it's adjustable in every dimension you can think of, so you can get it completely comfortable for both the baby and the adult.

Yes, but watch out for the hair pulling! (ANd ds id now happier on the ground tbh (nearly 2), but it was great as your dd's age

thanks for the replies. must admit to being a bit slow on the uptake. had a look at the review section before i posted but thought backpacks referred to rucksacks!!!!
i think we will have a look around. don't want to be making another expensive purchase that we hardly use ... bumbo...babysling...tummy tub...

I use a Vaude Jolly. DD2 was about 14 months old when we got it and we have had a lot of use from it. She enjoys being high up and able to see what is going on. She is 26 months old now and is getting too heavy for it - after a 30 minute walk with her I am very glad to sit down.

One disadvantage I have found with the carrier I have is that although it has a large zipped pocket for your belongings, it's nearly impossible to unzip the pocket or get things out while you're wearing the carrier. Which is a pain if you're in a shop and fishing around for your purse. And you have to be very careful to zip the pocket up properly, or things start falling out. I'm not sure if any carriers have front/side pockets. Another disadvantage is that if your toddler's hat falls off you may not find out until you're a mile down the road!

i was thinking of looking at second hand ones. might be something that people get as a present and don't use much so worth a try. i'd love to try one before we buy but don't know anyone withone. dd might hate it more than the buggy.

LOL at your expensive but not used purchases - but then my ds loved his bumbo and tummy tub, and I had him in a sling quite a lot when he was a newborn. My least used purchase was a hippychick hipseat - load of rubbish, cos I still ended up sticking my hip out!
We have a Vaude, I think it's a jolly (not the top of the range model, but not the most basic, either. Worth having a look on ebay for something second hand, I think ours was over £100 new, but it's a while back since we bought it.

We have a Karrimor Delux, have tried other types but that is def the best, as it has a proper seat for the child so their legs are not dangling. Friends have borrowed it and all say its really good. Also it has a good sized compartment under the seat for all your stuff. The frame is adjustable so does DP (6'1") and me (5'2"). As our kids are only 16m apart I got another one, Kelty Kids, from ebay, supposedly the best american one, it was terrible, the childs legs just dangled and all his weight seemed to be on his crotch, and he seemed really low down.
The Karrimor Delux is over £100 new but there is usually one on ebay. They do hold their value though so don't expect one for pennies, but you can always sell it on when you've finished.

hi monkeybar, i liked the bumbo but got dd was probably a bit too old when we got it.

I loved the idea of the tummy tub but i was very nervous with dd and my mil went on and on and on about the tummy tub so she managed to convice me that dd would drown if i ever put her anywhere near it.
She doesn't know 'how she managed to raise her kids, all she had was a plastic bath..' and don't get me started on breast feeding, new fangled buggies, car seats, my reluctance to pump calpol into dd at every chance etc etc etc.
how i didn't drown HER in the tummy tub i'll never know
