Help!!! Combination feeding

So I’ve been combination feeding - breastfeeding during the day and then 7pm formula bottle - for the last 2 weeks ish.
Before this he was exclusively breast feeding and cluster feeding at night which I couldn’t maintain. My son is 5 months and has always been a huge baby - on the 98th percentile.
At night every day since combination feeding like this he takes 9oz formula bottle then falls asleep, and wakes again 45mins later. We’ve tried everything then to settle him - burping, sushing, cuddling, white noise, dummy etc for what seems like hours! - but the only thing that stops the screaming and settles him is another 3oz or so of formula... (or a breastfeed)... meaning he has 12oz in total!
He then sleeps til 2.30ish and has another breastfeed, then wakes at 6.30ish.
Is this way way too much formula in one feed? He isn’t sick and doesn’t seem to have tummy pain. Seems contended after the feed, stops feeding by himself and goes into the cot drowsy then falls asleep by himself with the dummy and a few sushes.
I’m just so worried about this 12oz (equivalent to 350ml I think) in one feed!!
No solids yet for him and he tends to “snack” breastfeed during the day due to distractions around us.
Any reassurance, tips or comments welcome from a stressed out mum!!

If he’s happy and you’re happy then why borrow trouble? It doesn’t sound like he’s being sick or whatever.

He’s doing a good long stint of sleep after that til 2.30. Have you tried offering a dream feed around 10.30 and seeing if you can push the 2.30 feed back a couple of hours to 4.30? We liked that - it meant a longer stretch of sleep for me before the night feed and it sometimes even meant a later morning wake up too.

My 98th centile for weight and height baby wanted weaning at 5 months, persevered with night feeds for 2 weeks before I gave him food, he ate so much food for days!

Sounds like he may need solids x

That sounds fine, though I would maybe also focus on better feeds during the day, even if it means planning your day around undistracted time. Mine would barely feed when out at that age, so just had to plan quiet times at home or when we were out so he could have a proper feed. Beyond that, if he’s not sick, he’s fine and just hungry.

Sounds like he may need solids

5 month old babies don’t need solids. He’s needing the calories so he’s taking more milk which is fine because it’s what he should do. As another poster m said, if he’s happy with it and managing it then why worry about it?

It sound so like he’s having a lot of his milk requirement from that 12oz so it was a good suggestion to try and up his milk intake during the day but I know that’s not always possible.

Each baby is different, there’s no set rules about what they should and shouldn’t do so just go with what your baby wants/needs and don’t worry yourself.

My health visitor always said that if it was too much they would sick it back up, so if he’s taking that amount and keeping it down that must be what he needs.
