How many poos each day?

DD is 4 weeks old and EBF. Was having a large poo with every nappy (up to 12 every day Shock) and usually just one nappy without poo round 4 am. Today and yesterday she's had fewer poos, had 8 wee nappies already today but only 5-6 with poo, 1-2 with just a small smear or stain. She seems happy and passing wind. Feels like I've got loads of milk (soaks my bra and shirts) and dribbles out of her mouth at the end of a feed. Should I be concerned? Read poos might decrease (1 in 7 days Confused) at 6 weeks but DD is only just 4 weeks...?

My ds generally had 1 poo every 3 days for the first 4 or 5 months of his life, also EBF. He's 3.2y now a poos on average 3 times a day, which is something of a mystery as he lives on fresh (and breastmilk, still) for the most part. Kids and their bowels, a total mystery.

Fresh air that should say. 🙄

Yup. So long she's weeing plenty (sounds like she is) it's fine. My 3 were all EBF. I think there were a lot of phases - sometimes they pooed 2 or 3 times a day, other times it could be up to 3 days. DS3 especially used to go for ages sometimes - think he went for 9 or 10 days once. I was worried, but he was completely fine. Apparently, sometimes during a growth spurt EBF babies just absorb everything you give them and there's nothing left over to poo with...

I think as long as she’s bright and alert at times and is having plenty of wet nappies then anything is normal with a BF baby Smile

Have a read of Is baby getting enough milk as it explains how many wet nappies you should be getting]] and Breastfeeding your newborn, what to expect in the early weeks explains the poo frequency nicely Smile

You might find the Infant Feeding section on MN useful too and congratulations on your lovely new LO Thanks

At that age my DD was pooing 8 times a day, pretty much after every feed. I asked the dr at her check and he said that as long as she was pooing more than once a week (Hmm) and weeing plenty, nothing to worry about. She's now 2 poos a day at 14 months.
