What unnecessary things did you do as a first time mum? (Lighthearted)

With number two on the way, just having a think back about some of the things that I used to do with DS as a first time mum, that were unnecessary, and only made my own life harder!

I wonder if any others would crop up that I haven't recalled doing.

For example... putting a clean pair of pyjamas on him every single night, up until about a month ago (he's 2.4). No wonder I couldn't keep up with the washing!

Changing his nappy as a newborn, every single time the tiniest bit of blue line appeared on his nappy.... we went through over 20 nappies per day in the first week!

Washing all his clothes on the 'baby' setting on my washing machine, took nearly three hours per load, until my mum pointed out, that a higher temperature would kill germs just the same!

The most unnecessary thing I bought was probably bump headphones to play music to the bump Shock

I love this thread! Also just my ds is 8 months old and I just realized the envelop top thing

Thetigerwhocameto · 17/12/2018 03:25

Changing dd’s Clothes every time she had a little milk or vomit on her. As a baby with awful reflux this wore thin at around 6 months 🙈

@Charley50

Baby swimming lessons what's wrong with baby swimming lessons? We did 10 weeks from 6 months old and they were great. My dd loves being in the water, under the water. Its so good for building water confidence

Crazybunnylady123 · 17/12/2018 11:01

I iron all dds clothes, so she gets crisp pjs. I spent a complete fortune on mark & spencers and mothercare clothes. Now it’s all primark and Sainsbury’s. I get her organic food and she had organic skincare. I don’t see the latter changing however.

Bibijayne · 17/12/2018 11:26

@Thetigerwhocameto

Ha! Yes. My 4 month old has bad reflux (mostly happy spitter, except at witching hour). For the first few weeks I would change his outfit when he spit up.

Too.much.laundry.

Now I wait until it's actually dirty/ soaked.

Bibijayne · 17/12/2018 11:29

DH was with me on this one too. We had no idea that newborn and 0-3 months were different sizes.

Bought a couple of outfits from Aldi. DS was slightly premie and weighed just under 6lbs when born. He only started fitting into those outfits at 12 weeks...

Bibijayne · 17/12/2018 11:30

@chardonm

I showed my husband the envelope top thing on the weekend. His mind was blown. DS is 4 months.

golddustwomen · 17/12/2018 11:30

Thinking I had to use pamper nappies and Johnson wipes!! Saved a fortune when I moved over to little angels!

bourbonbiccy · 17/12/2018 11:55

Oh my god so many of these
hoki I am still the same now with my 16 month and the TV/iPads/phones (all my friends laugh saying when my DS goes to school all his friends will think he's Armish )

Taffeta I never knew about the envelope necks for that !!! Always learning

PerfectPeony I am the same had the memory maker feet and hands done, do feet and hands painting on his Christmas and birthday cards, had 3 photo shoots for him as well as the photo albums for each year, kept loads of 1st for him ( shoes, fave jumper, jeans oohh so so much stuff.

Thetigerwhocameto · 17/12/2018 12:17

@Bibijayne so much vomit 🙈

Is it bad that I also apply a similar rules to myself 😂

Flamingosnbears · 17/12/2018 12:24

Pregnant with baby #3 and I guarantee I'll still do all things I've done with my DS and DD I've also kept both umbilical cords.

themagicamulet · 17/12/2018 12:25

Ds1 had such a healthy diet that he was able to ask 'Mummy, what are these?' in a perfectly articulated sentence when he came across his first Wotsit at a birthday party. Ds2 was pretty much weaned on Monster Munch...

Jog22 · 17/12/2018 12:26

Got up.

wombatsears · 17/12/2018 12:29

Take the vest off over his head when he’d done an exploding poo - didn’t realise the envelope neck meant you could slide down over body avoiding over the head

Who knew!? I’ve tried it this morning and it’s a game changer. Thanks @Taffeta

Taffeta · 17/12/2018 12:33

You’re welcome wombat

I can’t believe 15 years on this still isn’t advertised. Vest manufacturers are missing a trick on their packaging I feel.

courgettetrees · 17/12/2018 12:38

Changed nappy at first sign of a blue line (I'm sure those lines are to sell more nappies Hmm)

courgettetrees · 17/12/2018 12:39

I used an app but it was so helpful! Took away all the thinking. I used to log feeds and sleep mostly

masterstef · 17/12/2018 12:39

@Bibijayne me neither, I didn't realise newborn and 0-3 months were different. I bought all 0-3 and panicked when (average sized) ds was too small, so I bought a bunch of 'tiny baby' size!

slappinthebass · 17/12/2018 12:39

Oh god it was the food.
Only organic until at least 2.
No artificial sweeteners, no chocolate, no juice, fruit and 2 veg with every single food serving, HOMEMADE organic yoghurt because the local shops didn't sell organic yoghurt then. Sugar free first birthday cake anyone? I see posts about recipes for that for PFB's birthdays quite a lot and snigger.
Dc3, aged almost 2 this morning had a Macdonalds breakfast along with artificially sweetened Oasis. Me 10 years ago would be wringing my hands and silently scathing if I'd witnessed it.

slappinthebass · 17/12/2018 12:41

Oh also going to the baby weigh in clinic every single week for a year. Why?!

BifsWif · 17/12/2018 12:42

Please, please tell us more about the prop baby!

MyBreadIsEggy · 17/12/2018 12:44

Lovingly ironing and folding every single item of baby clothing after every wash Blush including her socks Blush
Fast forward 8 months later and I find myself pregnant with DC2, vomiting all over the shop and dressing my DD in whatever was clean, dry and at the top of the unfolded laundry pile Blush
They are 2 & 3 now, so I’m a bit more on top of things....but still the iron stays in its cupboard collecting dust.
Ain’t nobody got time for that

causeimunderyourspell · 17/12/2018 12:47

The clean pjs every night thing! I still do that now and mine are 3 & 4 Blush I don't know why but I thought it was the done thing! I'm stopping as of today!!!

TinselBee · 17/12/2018 13:18

Buying a massive pram, getting the Silver Cross Pioneer was just such a mistake! It was £750 new, with all the accessories, and I cant even sell it for £150 (it is in great condition) a year later!

We now have a much lighter and smaller pram which will be just perfect for our next DC (if we are lucky).
