What unnecessary things did you do as a first time mum? (Lighthearted)

With number two on the way, just having a think back about some of the things that I used to do with DS as a first time mum, that were unnecessary, and only made my own life harder!

I wonder if any others would crop up that I haven't recalled doing.

For example... putting a clean pair of pyjamas on him every single night, up until about a month ago (he's 2.4). No wonder I couldn't keep up with the washing!

Changing his nappy as a newborn, every single time the tiniest bit of blue line appeared on his nappy.... we went through over 20 nappies per day in the first week!

Washing all his clothes on the 'baby' setting on my washing machine, took nearly three hours per load, until my mum pointed out, that a higher temperature would kill germs just the same!

Rudolph that is delightfully mad Grin

Hoki thank you Smile. Feeling a bit bad that poor old ds2 just has to put up with a cold bot now.

PipGoesPop · 16/12/2018 20:37

Ironing baby gros for first 3 months.

masterstef · 16/12/2018 20:37

Prop baby is the winner!

@poster QuilliamCakespeare

My husband used to watch Dexter with headphones so our precious newborn poppet’s ears would be unsullied by the sound of serial killing. He’s our second child Grin Blush

bobstersmum · 16/12/2018 20:47

Oh my goodness the prop baby! Lol!

PaintBySticker · 16/12/2018 20:49

The prop baby Grin What happened if someone refused?

E20mom · 16/12/2018 20:51

The prop baby wins!!!

Believeitornot · 16/12/2018 20:56

@RudolphsJinglingBalls

Prop baby?!?!? Brilliant 👏

Merename · 16/12/2018 21:03

Yes @RudolphsJinglingBalls I have laughed at a few PFB threads but that may be one of the maddest, I love you for it! I think we need a bit more detail though, how did people react and how did you come up with this idea?!

Definitely bathing every night. With DD1, she was such a dreadful sleeper that I read anything and everything to try to improve and had this ridiculous rigmarole with baths, aromatherapy diffusers, red light, yadayada and it never made a blind bit of difference. She’s still a shit sleeper at 3 and DD2 at 3 months sleeps beautifully and she gets bathed about every 10 days!

SPR1107 · 16/12/2018 22:17

These are cracking me up!

I was a car seat warmer-upper too! Microwaveable bean bag thing!

Also guilty of sleeping on the floor next to the cot for a sniffle... although didn't dare move him out of my room until gone 9 months old!

The vest and inbuilt mitten things, should be taught at antenatal classes definitely!!

The prop baby, is hands down, the best thing I have ever heard anyone do!

Ds was born in June so all summer I walked with him in the pram and me either adjusting the parasol every 5 mins or walking to the side of the pram so my shadow kept him protected from the sun.

Loving prop baby, would have loved to be a fly on the wall 😂

QuilliamCakespeare · 16/12/2018 22:39

@PaintBySticker You've totally out-parented me I'm afraid. I do wonder if this is why PFB is a bit of wuss... Second born had no early exposure to tv series featuring increasingly ridiculous murders and is hard as nails. Hmmm... I might publish an academic paper with my findings.

Bobbiepin · 16/12/2018 22:43

I love threads like this. DD was breastfed to criminal minds (her night feeds generally lasted the length of one episode, perfect!) If she grows up to be a serial killer (or an FBI agent) I'll know why.

Helpisneeded13 · 16/12/2018 23:31

The night I give birth to ds, I didn't want him to cry or put him down so watched shameless Usa all night on the labour ward. With headphones in obviously.

Helpisneeded13 · 16/12/2018 23:36

Feed and poo journal Blush I was 17 so I didn't want to get anything wrong or not know if I was asked.
Plus buying toooooo many newborn clothes, grew out of them before he
Got to wear them again.

meow1989 · 16/12/2018 23:40

Oh I also used an app to log every feed, sleep, and nappy change until DS was 4 months old and a good friend burst out laughing when I showed her

riotlady · 16/12/2018 23:54

@meow1989

I am still using an app to do that and baby is nearly 9 months old Blush

meow1989 · 16/12/2018 23:58

You win @riotlady Grin

riotlady · 17/12/2018 00:01

In my defense I found it quite useful in the beginning (albeit mostly so dh could look there to find out when she was last fed/changed instead of bugging me)
It is probably a bit redundant now though...

masterstef · 17/12/2018 00:20

I also used an app to log every nappy! As well as feeds and sleep. Heath visitors would ask me, in the very early days, when he last pooed etc or how often he fed and for how long. As the hours blurred into each other I never had a clue unless I put it into the app! Still doing it with my second although only for sleeps and feeds...

Betsy86 · 17/12/2018 00:35

rudolph prop baby 😂😂😂

DonaldDucksTowel · 17/12/2018 00:39

I need to hear more about this prop baby...

yesmelord · 17/12/2018 00:41

I used to really over change DD1s nappy- it wouldn't even be wet but I'd change it just to make sure she was clean and comfy.

I also used to pick her up every time she would make a tiny sound - just to make sure she was alright.

DD1 is now 2 (just) and I'm 6 months pregnant with DD2.
I have no idea what things are going to be like this time round! I hope I'm a bit more chilled though.
I think I spent the first 6 months of DD1s life in a massive over thinking stress ball!

Betsy86 · 17/12/2018 00:44

Ooh just remembered my friends dh was abit umm ott and as soon as baby was asleep and that was up a flight of stairs and through atleast 2 doors away from the kitchen... he would insist on the kettle not being boiled. Any cans/bottles of fizz had to be opened at the other end of the garden so the hiss noise didnt wake pfb. Tv had to be watched on basically mute and it was until about 18 months until he was allowed to eat without one of then holding onto the item of food for dear life to prevent him guzzling it. There were tears at a party when he had he first unaided lick of a quaver.
They are nice folk though just sbit ott lol x

PatricksRum · 17/12/2018 02:53

I still have dd's bit of umbilical cord, only 4 months old though. Wink
