Preparing formula on holiday and out and about.

Hi, I have a 3 month old who is ebf except for one or two bottles of formula a week if I am out. We are going skiing for New Years and will be leaving baby with family for short periods of time.

I want to take powder formula as taking enough liquid formula for a week would be a nightmare and not sure they will sell the one he has out there, I’ve not prepped powder formula before, is it safe to take a thermos of hot water to prepare the formula if out and about? Or does that not sterilise the powder? How would people do this?

Personally I’d take the liquid - you can order it to pick up at boots airside so it doesn’t come into your luggage allowance. Otherwise take a thermos - I used to use a tommee tippee one that was marketed as a bottle warmer but kept water above 70 degrees for about 8 hours and wasn’t too big. Either make up the whole bottle with that water or you can use a couple of ounces of the hot water, mix the powder in and top up with cooled boiled water ( I used to carry this in a separate screw lid container).

Yes, you can take a thermos of nearly boiling water and then cool the bottle in cold water before serving. But honestly it’s a lot of faff. I would just use the pre made stuff. If you are mostly bf, then using a particular brand really doesn’t matter. You can pick up some going through the airport or use a local brand (I’m assuming you’ll be in Europe, it’s all roughly similar). Or bring a pump and express. I would do whatever is easiest really as you’re not using much of it anyway.

I took ready made, baby had a suitcase full of formula nappies and wipes! Most airlines give baby their own luggage allowance or increased yours
