Potty training help

So yesterday we attempted start potty training our 2.5 year old, we got off to a good start and ended on a positive where she took herself off to potty and did a wee. Fine with nappy back on for night time but she had a wakeful night whereas she usually sleeps through.

Today we haven't managed anything on the potty, she doesn't want to sit on it, and she's not eating and seems likes she's holding her wee in

I don't know what to do now, is she not ready or do I continue?? I've read it's not a good idea to stop and start but I just don't know what to do for the best

I really recommend a book called ‘oh crap’ potty training. It talks you through everything but essentially the first few days are naked bum and watching kid like a hawk to see cues when they need to pee/ poo and trying to catch the wees. When they are managing to get wees in potty naked you move on to trousers commando, as pants mimic the feeling of nappy and encourage peeing. Then after a month or so introduce pants.Defo stopping and starting isn’t a good idea. The book talks a lot about how it’s natural for them to be a bit freaked out when all they’ve known is nappy, and helps you on how to talk about it and how to build their confidence. It’s amazing what an emotional rollercoaster potty training is! Sounds like you’re both doing well and you should just persevere. You could up fluids a bit to give her a bit more chance to practice. There’s a potty training thread you may want to move this to for more thoughts.

Thanks for your reply, I actually have the book and read it briefly back in the summer so I've been following the books recommendations. Dug it back out lunchtime and so glad I skimmed back through as it says about resistance on day and that it's to be expected.

We've pushed on this afternoon and we've got all wees in the pot but she's struggling to poo I think she's constipated. Have seen massive progress though so I'm glad I didn't throw the towel earlier. Will try commando tomorrow.

That’s great! Well done to both of you. I found myself constantly returning to the book for advice or reassurance. Good luck tomorrow!
