Struggling to put almost one year old to bed

DS is almost 1. He's breastfed, never taken a bottle and eats well (when he spends day with DH or at nursery he's fine without milk, has some water and I feed him in the morning and evening and overnight). When I do bedtime or naptime, he's fed to sleep. Sometimes it's pretty straightforward and he feeds and will then go straight to sleep. However, he often sits up and gets upset. If I try to put him in his cot he stands up and gets increasingly upset. He used to sometimes fall asleep cuddling but he now thrashes around and cries. Eventually he sleeps after on and off feeding, but it seems quite stressful. DH does same bedtime routine but can put DS down with a cuddle and some shushing, and his naps are really straightforward. He obviously can get himself to sleep but having me there seems to upset him and make it harder (although he still needs feeding at some point overnight). Has anyone dealt with something similar? I think I need to night wean but I'm worried he'll still be unsettled with me.
