Which thermometer is best for a baby?

Which kind of thermometer is most accurate for a newborn? I've heard people recommending Braun but I'm not sure if the scanner or the in-ear ones are best when they're tiny?

We can see this thread is quite old now and some of the suggestions may be out of date, but we have lots of options for newborns on our best baby thermometer page, plus info on the best way to take a newborn's temperature – we hope you find it useful. Flowers

I've never owned a thermometer. You know if they are hot.

I've got a Braun one that you put near their head but I didn't buy it. If I was buying one, I'd get a cheap underarm thermometer - they're great.

Braun Thermoscan 7. Takes seconds, really easy to use.

With a daughter that has had 3 hospital admissions with convulsions and seizures due to temperature caused by tonsillitis u do need a thermometer, ignore that advice! her temp would only get to 39 and that was it! Despite constant use of calpol and nurofen..
we had a armpit one which now she is petrified of and being 21 months she puts up a fight now, we are goin to get an ear one as it's quicker and less intrusive

pinkhorse · 24/11/2018 13:34

I've never had one!

LeeMiller · 24/11/2018 15:36

I appreciate not everyone thinks they're necessary but I think I'd feel more comfortable being able to double check with a thermometer.

Maybe I will pick up a cheap underarm one and look for a deal on the fancy Braun one.

Braun in ear. Our nicu nurse recommended we get one and this one was exactly the same as our GPs one and the local hospital.

HopeGarden · 25/11/2018 13:47

We have a Braun in-ear thermometer. It’s very easy to use.

I tried an underarm one first but I could never get the hang of using it on a wiggly baby.

InfantaSybilla · 25/11/2018 13:49

I have the braun forehead thermometer. I think it's great as I can use it on dd when she's asleep

MissClarke86 · 25/11/2018 13:52

We have an in-ear one but if the infra red ones are just as accurate and not a milllion pounds I’d go for that as you can take temperature without waking them up

LeeMiller · 25/11/2018 13:53

Ok it's sounding more and more like Braun might be a good choice, wonder if they do one that works in-ear as well as scanning the forehead?

We have an in-ear one picked it up in the Black Friday sales - great for a first time parent!

Jackshouse · 25/11/2018 14:07

Definitely get one. I became very ill with spesis after having DD and without a thermometer I would have taken myself to bed rather than ringing the hospital and the outcome would not have been as good.

When DD was in hospital (unrelated) they would only use an under arm thermometer on an under 2 as they are more reliable.
