What size clothes?

Looking for help on what size clothes I should be packing for new baby in hospital bags. I have 0-1 from H&M and similar from primary. Are these ok? Or should I have newborn size?

The vests look ok but some of the sleepsuits I have look quite long/big for a newborn. Should I stick and just roll up sleeves legs if needed or buy smaller?

34 weeks now baby measuring on track to be around 7lb7

I really don’t know. One the advice of my midwife I did not get newborn but bought up to 1 months. They lasted my 9lb 9oz DD about a week.

GMtoBe · 23/11/2018 14:42

I only bought 0-3month for dd. She was 7lb4oz when born. We had to roll sleeves up but it was fine.

I packed newborn but my mum had to go out and buy tiny baby after he was born because newborn swamped him!(he was 6lb 3oz when he was born)I would pack a variety of sizes. He is now 6lb 11oz and still in tiny baby.x

Mine were over 8lbs and needed newborn for a couple of weeks... 0-1 months and 0-3 months swamped them!

The measurements arent reliable - my dc2 was going to be 11lb minimum if left to 40 weeks - he was 8lb 6 but long.

None of my babies really needed newborn size at all though, 0-3 was right as newborns. Other full term babies can need tiny baby. Even babies the same weights need different sizes.

I'd pack a couple of newborn vests and babygrows and one 0-3.

I'm glad that in the country where I had dc2 and 3 the hospital supplied vests, babygrows, nappies and sleeping bags while in hospital so we could wait and see!

It also depends on the shape of baby. My 7lber needed 0-3 for length.
His 8lb brother a few years later fitted in new born.

But yes, if they are too big, it's not the end of the world for a few days til someone can go shopping.

myotherbagisgucci · 23/11/2018 18:46

My DD was 7lb 10oz and was in tiny baby size for 4/5 weeks before moving into newborn size.

If I were you, I'd take the 0-1 H&M and see how big baby is when born. You could always get someone to nip out and get you smaller sizes if needed whilst you're still in hospital. Xx

steppemum · 23/11/2018 18:53

well I took newborn and 0-3 months, and then had a 10lb baby and dh had to go home and fetch some 3-6 months (loads of hand me downs)

It is so hard to tell, long skinny baby, short fat one, same weight, different sizes.

I would say buy bare minimum, and leave tags on most of it. Then when they are born you can wash and use it, or take it back and swap it.

Eeeeek2 · 23/11/2018 18:55

I took newborn and up to 1 month, newborn didn't fit despite him being 7lb9 he was very long.

HopeGarden · 23/11/2018 18:59

My DC were all tiddlers when born, and would have been swamped in 0-1 month clothes.

But having baby clothes too big isn’t a major problem, if there’s a 24 hour supermarket nearby it should hopefully be easy enough to get someone to pop out and buy a few smaller baby clothes if needed.

YeOldeTrout · 23/11/2018 19:02

I like newborn sizes. Mine were 6lb8oz-8lb11oz & all got plenty of use out of a small selection of newborn size items.

randomsabreuse · 23/11/2018 19:03

My first was predicting 50th centile, born 38 weeks (spontaneous) and needed tiny baby for width and newborn for length. Was in tiny baby vests for about 4 weeks and newborn for 3 months. Should have been in size 0 nappies but they weren't a thing...

2nd predicting huge, induced at 38 weeks as a result, born at 8lbs and 0-1s only just long enough, some 0-3s ok for neck width, some swamp him. Wearing newborn vests with extenders and size 0 nappies at 2 weeks old despite being in 0-1 sleep suits.

DH and I clearly make scrawny long babies...

Upshot is take a variety and send someone to a 24h supermarket if you guessed wrong. For my 2nd I brought a variety of sizes to hospital, had some others sorted at home and planned to send someone shopping asap post birth and to buy an eBay bundle asap once we had an idea of size...

Sweetiedarlingletmein · 23/11/2018 19:22

I took newborn and 0-3 but DH had to make a dash to the shops the following morning to get tiny baby. She didn’t fit into 0-3 until she was 4 months old. Full term, 6lb 12oz born.

SPR1107 · 23/11/2018 19:32

Had an 8lb 3oz and newborn were too big.

H&M and Matalan also came up slightly bigger I found.

Grab a pack of plain white newborns from Asda, if you don't get much use out of them, it won't have cost you too much
