did any of you go for a normal bed straight away and not a toddler bed or a particularly low bed?

normal bed with a bed rail - no probs at all

Nemo2007 · 21/06/2007 07:37

mine went into toddler beds but only because I had gotten cot beds..however at 2.4yrs Ds went into a midi sleeper with no problems.DD1 is 18mths and can get up and down into his bed, she can get down from our bed but cant get up onto it. Also never used bed rails with the toddler beds but then there wasnt far to fall so think bed rail on normal bed would be fine.

Blandmum · 21/06/2007 07:39

We had a very low bed from Ikea that had a small side rail. TBH we didtched the rail almost immediatly.

I was going to go for a full-sized bed, but then happened upon a toddler bed on eBay and was carried away by a fit of enthusiasm. A normal bed would have been fine, though.

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 08:03

lemon how old was he?

dd pretty much sleeps through in her own bed, though she comes through about 5 most nights. Shes nearly 2.

We have 2 critter ikea beds with guard rails, both on the outside, pushed together (one for each child) so overall they can't roll out. These beds ARE low though. The advantage of them being low IMO is that they can get in and out of the bed themselves.

Clayhead · 21/06/2007 08:14

Normal bed with one of those Tomy rails with both dd and ds at 18 months, never had a problem.

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 08:15

could they get in and out by themselves clayhead?

I think DS was under 2 when you went into a bed, can't remember now He went into one of those guest beds (with another bed under) so it was quite high. We got a really long bed rail and he didn't try to climb out though had been getting out of his cot.

fillyjonk · 21/06/2007 08:17

dunno about tomy, but its finr on an ikea bed. the bed is low to the floow anyway and theres a gap between the rail and the end of the bed

spykid · 21/06/2007 08:18

normal bed with no pillow and a bed guard
toddler beds a waste of money and a sales ploy to get us to spend more money imo.

spykid · 21/06/2007 08:19

they could get out of bed but didnt
it was the tomy folding bed guard
both ds's 18 months

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 08:20

the one thing i am thinking though is that they wouldn't be able to get out of a normal bed by themselves cos they are higher iyswim?

OP posts:
belgo · 21/06/2007 08:20

A mattress on the floor. Don't trust bed rails, my dd would have climbed over them, therefore falling further

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 08:20

oh so at 18 months they could climb in and out.

OP posts:
spykid · 21/06/2007 08:22

mine could, but didnt iyswim

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/06/2007 08:49

Normal bed no bed rail. ds2 was already climbing from his cot and falling to the floor so it was an improvement lol.

DelGirl · 21/06/2007 08:53

my dd just went in the cotbed bed. On the lowest height with no rail. She fell out about 3 times but hasn't since. That was in February I think at 22 months.

choosyfloosy · 21/06/2007 08:54

18 months no bed rail. It was a nightmare because he COULD get out but it was perfectly safe, certainly.

I suppose I wonder whether he felt insecure in it and that's why he was always getting out, but I don't think so, he just wanted to be where the action was!

Chirpygirl · 21/06/2007 09:04

My DD will be going inot a normal bed any day now, (as soon as she clicks she can get out of the cot!)
We are using a normal single bed base that the legs have broken off so it is just a base and a mattress on the floor, thus stopping the 'falling out and rolling back under the bed to sleep' trick that runs in my family.

katelyle · 21/06/2007 09:19

Mine went straight from moses basket to futon on the floor. Brilliant simple solution (although I say it myself- shame there's not a big head emoticon!)- can't understand why more peopledon't do it!

3littlefrogs · 21/06/2007 09:23

Bed with bed guard, but stairgate across bedroom door, and bedroom had to be thoroughly toddlerproofed. He was only one, but was climbing/vaulting out of cot onto floor, so no choice really.

mummymagic · 21/06/2007 09:36

Katelyle - i too thought this but my little one is a v inquisitive little minx and i wonder if she would have gone wandering (before she was old enough to understand 'this is where i sleep'.) do you put a stairgate on the door. I am very tempted - its so hard settling her in her prison. I mean, her cot. She is so much happier in our bed with us or for daytime naps (and yes can go in and out herself). She is 14 mths. How old is your little one?

I think most people use the cot for containment purposes no?

nappyaddict · 21/06/2007 11:09

i was in a bed from 8 months. ds is 1 on sunday and i think we are going to get him a bed soon.

3littlefrogs was it a normal bed or toddler bed you used? and how many months passed one was he?
