What sort of underwear does you 8/9 year old DS wear? Does he care?

DS is almost 8. Wears 'slips' i.e. boys pants. Tends to have Harry potter/ Spiderman etc.
But he'll only wear black & dark blue ones etc for school - not white.

I need to buy him some new ones, but wondered if boys begin to like something different once they are in 'junior school' ??

Do they care?

Ds 7 wears marks and spencers soft boxer shorts. I think a lot of the boys in his class wear boxer shorts.

cornishpasty · 20/06/2007 21:37

Ds 9 is in boxer shorts too. Has been for years.

my 6 yr old has decided he is too old for novelty pants and is now in jersey boxers from gap or wherever.

my 3 yr old is still delighted with spiderman pants

maybe ask him?

A lot of it depends on the child. Some of DS's friends have been in boxers since potty training which I think is unnecessary and expensive personally. DS is 6 and has been happy to be in pants (with pictures) so far. However when he had stitches in his scrotum and also a wound on his bikinie line (or male equivalent) round about Easter I bought him some boxers that I thought might be easier on the tender bit, which he wore around the house with a t-shirt while he was recovering - sort of like big knickers after a section. Now he wears them interchangeably.

my 8 yr old ds1 wears M&S or Next plain pants in shades of blue and grey - he's never expressed a preference

NormaSnorks · 21/06/2007 09:14

OK - so we went into M&S yesterday and I managed to steer him past the boys pants and have one of those 'passing' conversations with him about it (the only way to do it with boys, in my experience!)

Turns out lots of his friends wear boxers and while he didn't seem too bothered he decided he's prefer boxers. So we bought 6 pairs.

We went to put them on this morning, said they 'felt funny' under his school shorts and changed to pants!

Aargh.... will need to wean him into them gently....

My older boys (aged 11 and 9) still wear slips or whatever they are called, and are completely unbothered by them as far as I can tell, but then dh wears that style of underwear too. I buy plain underwear for the 11 year old - no pictures or designs but tbh, only because they are cheaper. I had not thought about embarrassment when changing for PE. Ds2 wears ds1's cast offs and some still have pictures on but nothing babyish (Robot Wars is one design I can think of). I have asked ds1 if he wants boxers, but he said no.

cylonbabe · 21/06/2007 09:20

ds, just turned ten, has requested boxers. so i gothim those.
i dont think it matters aslong as they are comfy, they fit, and they are not on display.

My 9 year old has just gone into boxers and finds them so comfortable he won't touch his other undies. Had to go out and get him more so he would have enough to change, initially I only bought him a 3-pack to try!

serenity · 21/06/2007 09:40

DS1(9) wears stretchy boxers, his choice, although he'll wear slips if that's all there is left. Not sure why he prefers them though.

DS2(7) prefers slips, but I think that's because he's very slim, and even the tighter jersey boxers tend to swamp him. I'd imagine slips are just more comfortable.

brightwell · 21/06/2007 09:44

My ds wears either briefs or boxers, probably whatever is at the top of the pile when he gets them out of the drawer.

NormaSnorks · 21/06/2007 10:41

Hmm - I am worrying about this too much

We (DH, DS1 & DS2 (5!) actually had a conversation about who likes what type of boys pants and why....

DS2's contribution was "I like big pants because otherwise my willy falls out..."
