My baby doesn't look at me

My baby will be five weeks old on Friday and he never looks at me in the eye. I feel like he will never smile. He was born at 37+1. Could there be something wrong?

Mine didn't at that age - especially when tired he actively avoided eye contact. I know why you're worrying but it's a little early to worry yet. Give him a few weeks. You can always speak to your health visitor if you have concerns.

My son didn’t really focus on my face until about 4 or 5 weeks and he was born at 40 weeks. It’s normal for your baby to be slightly behind if they were early. Don’t worry! It will come. I was convinced mine was miserable 100% until he started smiling. I’m sure he will soon

Try not to worry op, my ds didn't look or smile at me until probably about 7 weeks and even then it was only really fleeting. Now he is 13 weeks and his eyes follow me a lot and he smiles all the time. Oh and he was born at 40 weeks.

Social smiles don't normal start until babies are six weeks old. Babies can only focus on things 20cm away so you need to pretty close.

I got told that when a baby is early it does affect when they smile. Give it a few more weeks

It's too soon to be worried about this. It's very normal for babies to be as you describe. The smiles will come in the next few weeks.

I asked at my LO 8 week check as he couldn't focus on me and wasn't smiling. Told all fine by GP. A week later I caught him smiling at a picture in our living room. Only started smiling at us from about week 11 but hasn't stopped since.
