Introducing a bottle

I have a 6 week old son who is exclusively breast fed. I’d like to try and get him used to taking a bottle of expressed milk. We tried for this first time with MAM bottles this evening and my son at first went mad, then later sat with the teat in his mouth but not doing anything with it. I was out of the room and my DH was attempting the feed. Does anyone have any tips?

I’m sorry not really got any great tips! But trying a different type of bottle may help? My daughter took to Tommie tippie bottles great. Sometimes they just don’t like a bottle brand! 🤷🏼‍♀️

My friend has some other types I can try, not feeling hopeful! He acts like I’m trying to poison him when I have tried a number of different types of dummy!

I had the same problem with my DS. At the weekend he finally accepted one for the first time. He also no longer accepts dummies. We used a tommee tipee bottle. I found the key was waiting for a time when he was hungry but not ravenous and also in a good mood (so basically after a nap). When I could tell he was ok I popped him on the sofa, kept talking to him casually and just kind of held the bottle there. At first he played with the teat but then he accepted it and drank the whole lot. Keep perservering!!

I couldn’t get mine to take a bottle until he was about 7 months and also on solids, but check out ‘paced bottle feeding’. There are videos online.

A weird tip: Try the milk fridge cold and room temperature as well as warm. Mine wouldn’t drink warm milk from a bottle, but would take it cold. No idea why!

I am going to keep experimenting then! Thanks all x

My baby took well to tommee tippee and nuby. We introduced a 10ml bottle of expressed milk with vitamins daily from 1 week old. We kept her on slow flow teats when she got older which seemed to be her preference. I was told the nipple confusion is a myth and can lead to bottle rejecters later down the line. Glad I followed this advice as my baby can switch to a full bottle of expressed when needed. Good luck.
