Breastfeeding 1year old?

Hi all, just wondering how many breast feeds a one year old might need daily? My daughter has 3 meals, snacks and drinks throughout the day and still breastfeeds plenty too. She's up generally speaking once in the night too. I feed her back to sleep because it's what seems to work for us at the mo. My health visitor has said 2feeds a day now though... Anyone else go with this advice? Thank you :-) x

On demand. Whatever that may mean to you! I went back to work when DS was 1 year, so it was typically in bed before work and when I got home.

Health visitors usually know very little about breast feeding, so I would seek out advice from actual BF specialists if you have concerns.

Good luck.

Ignore your health visitor, how is she calculating that based on general information, it depends on each child. My ds is 1 very soon and feeds probably 6 times a day and about 4 times overnight. He would probably feed less during the day but it's the easiest way to get him to nap so I offer often when he's tired :) He eats and drinks very well too.

It varies so much from baby to baby, at 1 yo my DS was regularly taking 3 good feeds during the day (did some times vary) but then at night could be having a feed any amount of times! He did comfort feed a lot at night rather than for food/drink though.

I've always fed on demand. DS is now 21 months and still feeds morning, maybe twice in the day, bedtime and then sometimes in the night. He will happily only have morning and bedtime feeds on the days I'm at work.

With all my children on wake up bf and then breakfast and then bf before nap time and then lunch and then dinner and then bf at bedtime.

Other times sippy cup except with my 2.5 year old who still drinks out a babies bottle

I still feed my 3yo in demand 😩

Beamur · 05/11/2018 15:58

Feed on demand - I was back at work by this time, so it was usually when I got home, at bedtime, in the night if she woke and in the morning. At weekends there was probably a daytime feed too.
Not all were really about food.
I stopped at 2.5 years as I'd had enough by then.

Eatmycheese · 05/11/2018 20:06

@Shmithecat same here. Plus I'm feeding her almost one year old brother on demand still. Sometimes they are both in with me

@Rorymum just whenever they want it's fine.

DS was 13mo when he stopped BF - at which point he was only having one feed at bedtime. DD is 15mo and has a bf at bedtime, during the night and sometimes first thing in morning or during the day if she’s knackered or unwell. Showing no signs of stopping!!

Thank you ladies. On demand feels like the right thing. I was just having a wobble since the health visitor... mind you she did say that by 8 months she should be sleeping through... hahahaha! xx

Health visitors say one thing and do another as mothers themselves I suspect.
Sounds like you're doing a great job. I've Breastfed three babies and they are all totally different in their feeding habits and sleeping patterns, you just have to crack on and see what works for you both.

RedPandaMama · 05/11/2018 20:13

We stopped a couple of weeks ago at 14 months as DD lost interest. By about 9 months she was down to 3 times - morning, pre-nap and pre-bed, then we started bottled milk before bed then dropped the nap feed so by 12 months it was just morning feed.

I miss the morning cuddles but now it means I can get up and have me and her ready and out the house in less than an hour, whereas we used to be sat in bed for up to 30 mins while she fed!

whatsnewchoochoo · 05/11/2018 22:38

I hate when health professionals do this! What's her opinion based on?

DS 23 months still feeds about 6x a day (2x in the night)

Shmithecat · 06/11/2018 04:00

mind you she did say that by 8 months she should be sleeping through... haha

Ha ha indeed, my 3yo also does not do this 😂😂🙄
