8 week old no dirty nappies

Hello,

Just wondering - my little one is 8 week old and hasn’t had a dirty nappy since Monday. That one on Monday was a poo explosion as before that she hadn’t gone since the Saturday morning.

I had spoken to my HV the first time it happened as I’m used to her going every hour before then! She didn’t seem to fussed but not sure if I should check with her again since is been four days?

She’s mainly breast fed but has 1 bottle a day of formula (never drinks it all, only a few ounces really)

I would add she’s super gassy and uncomfortable, but I got told just to keep up with infacol

It's not unusual for breast fed babies in particular to go for days between poos so I wouldn't worry about that but if she's uncomfortable have you tried cycling legs etc to help encourage it?

CJ1990 · 25/10/2018 11:05

Yea we’ve tried the leg cycling - she’s super strong so it’s tricky as she ends up fighting against me!

Even formula fed babies transition from the newborn style “pooing after every feed” to a less prolific bowel pattern at around 6-8 weeks.

Just keep an eye on things. When she eventually does go, if it’s still soft then I wouldn’t worry too much.

My 8weeker is like this. at 5-6 weeks went from Monday to Sunday without pooping, then didn't go again til the following Saturday. Since then usually don't see a dirty nappy for at least 4 days sometimes more.
Passed LOTS of gas.

Baby also breastfed with sometimes a bottle a day.

I've been reassured it's all normal

My DD was the same. Same situation, breastfed with the occasional bottle every now and then. The first weeks she was pooing a few times a day, then this changed to pooing every 10 days or so. I was concerned at the beginning and I though she was constipated, but she wasn't (I went to the GP). Apparently it is normal in breastfed babies, they can be without pooing for nearly a month. The day she pooed was explosive as well, huge! I remember once I had to take a flight and it was already day 9 of her not pooing, I was terrified of her pooing on the plane (I was going to take that flight on my own), but thank god she did it the evening before, phew!!
It corrected itself when we started introducing solid foods.

Both of mine really only ever went about once every 5-7 days before we started solids. HV said that my breastmilk must have just been really bioavailable!

I agree with PPs but just wanted to check that baby's weight gain is good.

CJ1990 · 26/10/2018 13:45

Yea weight gain is perfect :)

Thank you.

Normal. They can be anything from a poo a feed to a poo a week at this age when breastfed.

I don't think it's to do with the milk as my two have been polar opposites on this.
