Reflux

Hi, I was hoping for some advice about reflux in babies

I think my 10 week DS might have it as he’s sick a lot (as in pretty much from 1 feed until the next and I can’t put him down without him being sick), chokes and coughs when feeding and is sometimes screaming during the feed as if he’s in pain - he’s started refusing some of the feed when this happens

He’s formula fed but had the same symptoms when breastfed also

He’s my first child so I’m not sure what normal is. I’ve got a doctors appointment for this week but was wondering what everyone’s experience of reflux was?

I’m concerned they’re going to brush me off as a paranoid FTM

Oh I do feel for you OP, reflux is awful!

My DD had reflux from 6 weeks. I went to the doctors countless times, and was prescribed Infant Gaviscon and Ranitidine.

But I found the biggest improvement came from using MAM bottles, switching to SMA Anti reflux milk and keeping her upright for at least 20 minutes after each feed.

Thankfully her reflux disappeared soon after we started weaning and now she's 10 months, she doesn't have problems, although she's still on SMA Anti reflux milk. Xx

Thanks for the tips! We’re trying the 20 mins upright thing already so hopefully if we add some of the other things in it will help.

Did you have to speak to the doctor before switching to an anti reflux formula or did you just do it?

Fingers crossed I get an understanding doctor who helps

I just switched formula.

I'm sure your doctor will be understanding and they'll probably recommend that you try Infant Gaviscon before they'll give you anything stronger. Xx

Best thing for reflux is to keep them upright during the feed and for at least 30 mins after. Have things like the mattress or cot at a 45° angle I used to use books under the feet of the cot where the head was and did the same with the pram/buggy. Drs tend to give gaviscon first it helped with my now 8 yr old but didn't do anything for my 1 yr old. She ended up on ranitidine and carabel that and their man bottles were our life saver. We tried the anti reflux milk on advice from the Dr but it didn't work for youngest.

Hello, hope you don’t mind me jumping on your post, but My daughter is 18days old and last two days been inconsolable! She’s screaming in pain during sleep and feeding, pulling legs up towards tummy and we’re both generally exhausted from the constant crying.will only settle if I’m holding her upright, only having an oz of formula n I’m trying force her to have more. She’s on mamia from aldi and tommee tippee bottles. Been giving dentinox too. Been to my health visitor who’s said it’s reflux. I’m booked in with dr tomorrow

Hi @s2204 my DD was on TT bottles initially and I found they exacerbated her reflux.

I'd highly recommend getting some MAM bottles for you LO. Xx

Thanks everyone. I’ve got a chicco next to me so I’ll raise one of the ends and see if that helps!

Highly recommend mam bottles and hipp organic formula for reflux. MAM bottles are brilliant or Dr Browns and Hipp I find to be the smoothest least bubbly formula therefore less bubbles in the tummy is my theory! Worked a charm for mine and didn’t have to use the gaviscon prescribed. Also stopped using infacol and anything like that to encourage burps because it made reflux worse. Just my experience but if you look for similar previous posts on reflux or silent reflux or best for colic babies most people recommend those bottles and Hipp formula. Good luck x

Another reflux baby mummy! what helped my son hands down was mam bottles and ranitidine. Also kept him upright at least 20 mins after feed and tipped his cot/crib. We also gave ranitidine 15mins before his bottle which helped. My prayers are with you as it's terrible for babas and mamas. Definitely bring to doctor and try and either video what's happening or feed while there really helped me explain what happens and the doctor understands better. With my son I was trying to feed him next door to the doctors room and she heard him cry so knew exactly what was going on. Apparently reflux babies can suffer from colic at the same time caused by the reflux which I think was happening with my LB so the mam bottles helped. He grew out of it and stopped the ranitidine at about 9-10 months old slowly reducing from 6months old Smile

Go to the Gp. They'll give you Gaviscon which likely will do nothing. Then go back to GP and they'll prescribe Ranitidine. Ranitidine is amazing.

My baby had reflux and every feed was an absolute battle, screaming and pain. He dropped down weight centiles so doctors did take it seriously.
Started on gaviscon which helped but made him really constipated so was having to give laxatives too so that wasn't a good long term solution.
Moved onto ranitidine but that made him worse, persevered for 2 weeks as I know it works wonders for some babies but no help for us.
Dr then put DS on omeprazole and the improvement was seen after about 3 days. Never ever suffers anymore, give it just once a day. The difference has been incredible.
Good luck at the doctors
