When did you start putting your baby in outfits?

As in not wearing sleepsuits all day.

I have some lovely 3-6 month outfits, little trousers and tops. Tights and dresses etc. but I still don’t think she seems that comfortable in it. I sometimes put them on for when we go to babygroups and then change her when we get home.

We’re starting to think about buying 6-9 month clothes and so far I have only bought sleepsuits as I don’t want to waste money on lovely clothes she probably won’t wear. She has been quite a colicky baby but I think we are starting to see an improvement now.

Just wondering what everyone else did? Smile

Not for ages...I only started doing proper outfits every day once they were walking...I love babies in babygros and think it's more important for them to be comfortable. They did wear proper outfits prior to walking but only occasionally.

riotlady · 22/10/2018 09:56

About 3 months but “outfits” are generally soft dungarees, leggings and a top or a soft dress and leggings (although less dresses now she’s trying to crawl!) so pretty comfy

Perfectpeony · 22/10/2018 09:58

Everyone told me but I didn’t listen! I wish I had known what taking care of a baby is actually like, I have all these beautiful clothes for her but I just can’t be bothered. I’ve invested in some lovely ‘daytime’ sleepsuits instead, I also love putting her in the plain white M&S ones. They feel so soft and snuggly.

I had the odd few from 3-6 months but mainly sleepsuits until maybe 6-9 months I think.

SailAwayWithMeHuni · 22/10/2018 10:02

This probably won’t help but I think you need to just do what’s right for you.

I remember when my little one wasn’t even a month old someone said to me I haven’t seen her in any clothes yet, just baby grows. That made me feel bad so I put an outfit on her, just for someone else to say oh I prefer babies this small in baby grows.

On the same day someone said to me, oh I love babies in little shoes and then once the shoes were off someone else said I’m glad you haven’t put any shoes on her.

After that I realised I couldn’t win, so I gave up trying and did what I felt was right.

Looking back through photos just now, I see I had DD in outfits some days from theee weeks and every day from about five weeks. I’d forgotten it was quite so early. At the time it felt like it was what I should do, but when/if we have a second, I think I’ll wait longer - 12 weeks maybe.

Oly5 · 22/10/2018 10:12

From 6 months. I felt lazy leaving them in babygros after that...

Livinglavidal0ca · 22/10/2018 10:17

My son has just turned 1 and he wears probably 50/50 outfits Vs babygros. Usually babygros if we're in the house and leggings vest and t-shirt if we're out and about. He walks now so wears jeans sometimes as it's getting colder

Babdoc · 22/10/2018 10:18

Dungarees when my DDs started crawling, as it was better protection for their knees. About nine months, if I remember correctly?
It’s a waste of money to buy expensive outfits when they’re under 9 months, as they’ll just be sick on them and outgrow them rapidly. But if relatives have bought some for you, it’s polite to use them occasionally for photo purposes!

Totally agree with every experience and every last word that @SailAwayWithMeHuni has written.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 22/10/2018 10:25

Baby is six months. If we are having a day in the house he stays in his babygro. Might head out for a walk with him still in babygro.

I put him in outfits going out when he was about two months old. Only because people had bought outfits as presents and I felt guilty not using them. Plus it was very hot during the heat wave and he wore a light romper most days with no vest.

If I was buying clothes for baby myself I would stick to baby gros as much as possible and then soft clothes ( leggings, soft dungarees).

I see plenty of baby's at baby groups in babygros and I wouldn't bat and eyelid. I don't like seeing small babies like a trussed up turkey with head bands and bows on their heads and uncomfortable looking outfits. Each to their own though.

Steelesauce · 22/10/2018 10:32

From birth for all 3, lovely soft and comfy outfits. Cotton dungerees, rompers, joggers and jumpers for my boys and cotton dresses, soft tights and leggings for my girl. Cute and comfy, gives a day/night routine and I find it easier to change them.

FartnissEverbeans · 22/10/2018 10:55

I also love putting her in the plain white M&S ones

There’s nothing lovelier than a baby in a clean white sleep suit! You’re making me broody OP Grin

Bellabutterfly2016 · 22/10/2018 10:57

I had lots of outfits for my dd now 3 (I bought lots as did my family!) but pregnant with 2nd baby (boy) and I haven't bought hardly anything because I found myself selling excess girl stuff with tags on - it's just so wasteful having so much.

I did feel under pressure to "dress" my dd when we went out and about but secondtime round I'm a lot more relaxed about it all.

I would never put a little baby in hard denim jeans tho - I've noticed there's always racks of them in sales!!!!! Xx

Perfectpeony · 22/10/2018 11:48

Fartniss I put her in a white cotton babygrow freshly ironed after a Johnson’s bath with aveno baby lotion. I told myself no more babies but I think I will get broody thinking of my little baby girl when she’s older!

I think I will wait and see how things go then maybe I will get some outfits in 6-9 months. Grin

And no Bella definitely not jeans! That sounds awful. I do have some comfy cotton trousers which are lovely but I think because of her tummy issues they make her uncomfortable.

As soon as we come out of hospital my little one would be in an outfit each day and sleepsuits at night. Unless we were having a relaxing day then it would be sleep suits for us both all day

bluechameleon · 22/10/2018 11:57

I had lots of nice vests, leggings and dungarees so if I wanted him to wear everything before he outgrew it he needed to mainly wear leggings or dungarees in the day. I think as long as they are soft and comfy and easy for you to put on it really doesn't matter what their clothes are. I certainly don't judge people whose babies are always in baby grows (I maybe do slightly judge those whose babies are in jeans and trainers at 3m though...)

stiltonontoast · 22/10/2018 12:00

I'd say after 3 months as the weather was nicer for us (end of Jan baby) and it kind of seemed weird having him in a sleepsuit all day. He's now 8 months and we still only dress him in soft comfortable clothes - strictly no jeans!

Sleeplikeasloth · 22/10/2018 12:15

Unless ill etc, then outfits every day once home from hospital. Sleepsuits only at night.

bumblebee39 · 22/10/2018 12:23

DC1 from birth, DC2 is over one and still only wears outfits sometimes, DC3 will only have sleep suits etc. Until 1 years old (without feet once starts walking if before that). Can't believe how much time and money I wasted and they are much comfort in vests and sleep suits.

bumblebee39 · 22/10/2018 12:26

Ooh yes some soft leggings, dungarees and/or joggers are a must they pull on over a vest and separates are easier at times (especially the summer). But nothing tailored and certainly no tights early on. DC1 only wore them for photos tbh and spent most of the time in a vest or gro as was much easier to wriggle around in.

I find hard buttons etc. Make me cringe on little ones.

Lost5stone · 22/10/2018 12:32

Way too early. Like 4 weeks, I don't know why I was in such a rush. They were soft leggings and cotton dresses etc but even so. I'll wait at least 6 months next time.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 22/10/2018 12:34

Baby gros until they start walking then joggers and tshirts. Comfort trumps fashion.

Parker231 · 22/10/2018 12:41

Babygros until they were about 9 months - comfy for them and easy and practical to change nappies and they also washed well.
