When did you start putting your baby in outfits?

As in not wearing sleepsuits all day.

I have some lovely 3-6 month outfits, little trousers and tops. Tights and dresses etc. but I still don’t think she seems that comfortable in it. I sometimes put them on for when we go to babygroups and then change her when we get home.

We’re starting to think about buying 6-9 month clothes and so far I have only bought sleepsuits as I don’t want to waste money on lovely clothes she probably won’t wear. She has been quite a colicky baby but I think we are starting to see an improvement now.

Just wondering what everyone else did? Smile

Mine have all had a mix of babygrows and outfits from birth.

As long as they're soft cotton, I don't see how outfits are any less comfortable than babygrows?

RatBabies · 22/10/2018 12:42

I also found leggings and little dresses easier to change nappies in

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 22/10/2018 12:44

I’d bought some little top+leggings sets for dd once she was going into 3-6 months stuff. I found once she got more wriggly it was easier to just whip off leggings for nappy changes rather than have to undo and redo all the poppers, but that was just personal preference.

I tried to buy stuff that was practical and comfy- I brought a lot of the newborn and young baby outfits that wed been given back to the shop and swapped them for nice sleepsuits or pyjamas.

She’s 1 now and I still never put her in dresses as she’s still learning to walk and they just get in the way of her moving freely.

They’re only little for such a short period of time, there’s no need to rush them into jeans or shoes when they aren’t needed.

My DD has been in outfits from about 4 weeks with sleepsuits at night. They are all soft leggings and tops rather than anything restrictive. She's very comfortable in them.

rubyroot · 22/10/2018 12:56

8 months ago with a newborn I posted a thread- why do people put babies in outfits. I was adamant baby would be in baby grows until a year old. Mumsnet gave me some good ideas though. And He was in baby grows until about 4/5 months and then in 6-9 month little leggings, soft dungarees and soft trousers. I bought some long sleeve tops that fasten up under the nappy as tops always seem to ride up. He’s still in similar stuff at 10 months. He has got a couple of proper tops, but mostly long sleeve tops that fasten under nappy, lots of lovely cardies from grandma and soft trousers/ leggings. Love h and m for comfy and cool trousers/leggings and next for tops. Blade and rose have lively tights/leggings and tops too. If I had a girl I think I would dress in leggings and tops too- plenty of time to wear dresses. But then I’m not a fluffy pink kind of person

mamatomjl · 22/10/2018 13:18

From the beginning ? She wore leggings with cotton long sleeve tops from next, soft dresses etc nothing restrictive

Ive always dressed DS in whatever I'm bothered putting him in! Some days he stays in his baby grow but most days I change him after his morning nap into leggings/cotton bottoms and long sleeve T-shirt or long sleeve vest! If we're going somewhere like visiting people I might pop a soft pair of dungarees on him! People have bought him jeans and they won't be going anywhere near him as they just look so uncomfortable. Soft and stretchy is the way to go

Didsomeonesaybunny · 22/10/2018 13:30

I put my baby in a dress yesterday and whilst she did look adorable I don’t think it was the most comfortable outfit for her and changing etc was harder as she had tights on. Other than special occasions I am going to keep her in baby grows, Marks and Spencer and Mothercare have some lovely ones

bananasandwicheseveryday · 22/10/2018 15:32

A long time ago now, but from birth with both of them. Only ever owned one sleepsuit which was a gift. And it was never worn. My DC and DIL only put sleepsuits/babygros on dgs at night and have always used 'outfits'for daytime wear.
Personally, I don't like babygros and having changed dgs'nappy when he's wearing them as well as when wearing outfits, I don't think they are especially any easier.

Klouise777 · 22/10/2018 16:25

We did outfits from 3 months however it was the heat wave, lo was born in April so 3 months it was extremely hot. In outfit I mean shorts, stretchy ones and baggy tshirts. He's 6 moths now and he wears joggers and t shirts/jumpers or long sleeve thin tops. I do like jeans on a child they look cute but they must be so uncomfortable, I think leggings/joggers and t shirts and jumpers are totally fine, plus a little warmer when out now rather than sleepsuits as it's getting colder.

Klouise777 · 22/10/2018 16:26

Above should say I don't like jeans on a child!! Lo won't be wearing them for a long time yet!

myotherbagisgucci · 22/10/2018 19:25

As soon as we got home really. I've always thought that baby grows are bedtime clothes and outfits are for during the day. My DD has never worn a baby grow outside of the house. I got some lovely soft day time outfits from H&M and Mothercare.

elliejjtiny · 22/10/2018 19:36

With ds1 from about 2 weeks old Blush.
With my others about 9-12 months.

Caterina99 · 22/10/2018 19:43

Probably from about 2 months they stopped wearing sleepsuits all day every day and wore outfits during the day (mostly vests and leggings)

Once they got to about 8 months putting a sleepsuit on and off several times a day would be a huge pain anyway. I prefer trousers that are easier to pull on and their feet dont get tangled up with crawling.

papayya · 22/10/2018 19:44

About 2-3 months, but I love my babies being in a vest, sleepsuit and cardigan (if needed) during the day. I buy nice sleepsuits from Asda/Next/M&S and match their little cardigans, so cosy!

Narya · 22/10/2018 19:50

About 4 months, but he was a winter baby so the weather started getting too warm for sleep suits. I moved to mostly vests and dungarees initially.

Plus I got fed up of comments from other mums when out and about that having him in sleep suits was basically leaving him in his PJ's all day Confused Angry

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 22/10/2018 20:13

From about 3 months I would say, I find sleepsuits an absolute faff with all the poppers, cotton leggings and a vest are so much easier (particularly when you have a wriggler like I did). DD was also cruising from quite young most sleepsuits in smaller sizes don't have the non-slip soles, with leggings she could be in bare feet.

My DD is now 1 and her wardrobe is almost exclusively leggings with tops and vests. I like little dresses but they just don't suit her and tights are a PITA anyway.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 22/10/2018 20:22

Babygros until crawling. With ds1 I did more outfits purely because I had more time (though thought I was so busy!), Bit with subsequent babies there just hasn't been time and I've realised it makes minimal difference to any day/night routine. We've also had eczema issues with my eldest, so don't do daily baths, instead they get changed as needed. In the early days they're always needing changes due to possets and poos, and not long after that they're on to food mess, so they still get at least daily changes!

badb · 22/10/2018 20:22

Quite early here, because DS (10 weeks) has long legs and a short body - he grows out of baby grows in length before he does in width, and the next size up drowns him. Soft leggings and tops while he’s in between sizes. I prefer the baby grows, because he absolutely loathes getting tops on.

PhilomenaDeathsHeadHawkMoth · 22/10/2018 20:24

Not until they were sitting up.

LadyDuplo · 22/10/2018 20:36

I can't remember.

But, I do remember my (nice but dippy) dm asking me the day after my dd was born whether she was in "proper outfits yet!?". My dd was born by Caesarian, weighed 4lb15 and was on a tight feeding schedule. We were still in hospital. No, mum, no she's not

Lazypuppy · 22/10/2018 23:06

From about a week old i started putting her in leggings and tops etc for the day. Babygrows were for night

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 22/10/2018 23:17

From about 4 weeks we had a mixture, but we always “got dressed”, even if it was just into another sleepsuit. Similarly, I liked getting them changed at night into bedtime clothes, it was a good signal that things were calming down for sleep.

RubyBoots7 · 22/10/2018 23:40

From maybe 2 or 3 weeks they wore daytime outfits but mostly items that were similar material to sleep suits. Personally I find white sleep suits boring but have friends who adore them. I think put your baby in whatever the heck you fancy as long as they're safe and comfortable.

I'm actually not a huge fan of sleep suits as they never seem to fit right on our LO - theyre often either too short to the point it seems tricky to fully straighten legs, or too big so they pull their feet up inside and get in a tangle. We do sleep suits at night still, as (better fit for us) footless sleepsuits plus socks presents equal challenges and it's a bit nippy for bare feet.
