Good evening.

After advice if possible please regarding out 1 week old son.
He currently has cow and gate formula since he was born. He was fine the first few days in emptying his stomach and started turning into a mustard colour which is normal. But since he has, we have noticed he has been constipated and when we asked the midwife about this regarding changing formula, she said no and to give him an oz of cooled boiled water now abd again. We have did this since Tuesday and still no joy, and maybe a change of formula is the right way?
Any advice please on this
Thanks

I'd persevere a bit longer. He is only a week old and is just starting to get used to the formula and everything else about the outside world. Give him a little longer to settle Smile

Oh and how do you know he's constipated? Not all babies go every day or he might be one of them, or he might have a wind/colic issue if he seems in pain.

I would persevere too, with my first daughter I chopped and changed milk I don’t know how many times and it didn’t seem to work but with my second I gave her water and after a while it did seem to help. Hopefully he manages soon

My DD didn't got for 5 days around that age, I rang the hospital and the midwife told me to rub vaseline onto her bum hole. As apparently this can help. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I picked got from the supermarket, but thankfully she had finally pooped by the time we got home! Lol!

My DD was exactly the same (but on SMA) I think she maybe did two poos in her first week! We persevered.

However, soon we started to notice that she was getting a lot of trapped wind and discomfort (which resulted in her screaming and being inconsolable for anything longer than 10 minutes between the hours of 8pm and 11pm!) HV suggested colic. I did a little research and ended up changing her to Hipp organic and it was the best decision I've made so far! She's 3 months tomorrow and she's a completely different baby. Regular poos, wind that releases with normal winding and sleeping through the night.
Good luck - I know how overwhelming it can be in the early days!

Thanks for the replies. When he goes mainly every day, he cries with pain what it seems and his poo comes out like pebbles.

Pebbles is a clear sign of constipation... I would definitely give more water. I don’t want to sound patronising but are you levellingvoff the scoops when you’re making his feeds? If he’s having too much powder it can cause him to be bunged up... if you do look to change milk I suggest trying an easy to digest Comfort formula.

Also a tummy massage might help, take a look online for tips. Good luck hope it all improves for you all.

Willow4987 · 18/10/2018 22:30

I’ve also heard a warm bath can help so maybe try that for 10 mins or so every day...

You can also do bicycle legs as that’s supposed to help get things moving

adviceonthepox · 18/10/2018 22:38

Go to the gp pebbles instead of liquid poo in a 1 week old is not normal.

Valleyboy22 · 18/10/2018 22:42

Yeah we level off the formula before putting it in the bottle.

Mine same on cow and gate, swapped to hipp organic and that helped with wind as well as it’s very smooth, able to swirl it to mix instead of shaking it resulting in less bubbles!
