Is this normal?

Hi all,

I was just wondering how much it's normal for babies not to respond to their name? DS is 12 months, when he's playing with his toys and he knows i'm already in the room with him he won't respond to his name. However, he'll respond and turn around when other family members call his name or when i've been out of the room and I enter and he's facing away so he's not aware that i've entered the room (I'm a quiet walker, unless I hit the creaky floorboard in which case he turns arond to see whos there) Are they supposed to look everytime you call their name?

I'm really worrried because you hear so much about it being an ASD indictator. If any parents of ASD children out there could open up about what they first noticed in their child that made them suspect then that would be really helpful because there are a few other things i've noticed.

I would like to say though i'm not worried about autism or ASD because I think it would be the end of the world, absolutely not, I worry because I am so unprepared for the prospect of an ASD diagnosis in future.
Thank you

I’d say this is likely to be normal - children get very engrossed and either just don’t hear at all due to their focus on something else, or choose to ignore as they’re less interested in what you want vs what they’re doing. Even in my older ones (2,4)I have to work to grab their attention - getting into their line of vision and waiting for their attention to come to me when I talk

My son is 11 months and doesn't always respond to his name. It depends if he is busy playing or not to be honest.

Of course you should follow up if you're concerned but based on what you've typed he sounds just like my three , none of which have sen.
