Technology & gaming and our 8 year old

I’m looking for some advice re: my 8 year old son

It’s two fold really

A lot of his friends are massively into technology and gaming. The current obsession is RoadBlox, which I have concerns about. Some of his friends seem to spend hours on tablets and consoles. My wife and I would prefer to limit his screen time and try and get him involved in more traditional, old school interests such as Lego, reading, board games and sport. We do have an iPad and handheld Nintendo, so he does get to play but we’re concerned about online safety (ie. Not speaking to weirdos online). I recognise that this may only get worse and worse with more pressure for him to play the latest games, apps, downloads etc. I don’t want him to feel left out at school but again we can’t just let him run riot.

How do people strike this balance? What types of consoles and technology do you allow your kids on? What would you recommend xBox, Playstation, Wiis? What offer the best mix of fun games and parental controls?

To make matters worse, he always seems bored and this ends up with him winding up his younger brother. I don’t want to be restricting him too such an extent that he’s left out at school, but we don’t want him to spend all his spare time in front of a screen.

Thanks for your help
