Periods when breastfeeding

Hi all

My little boy is 12 weeks and I think my periods have returned. I'm EBF.
Is this common?
I thought that until you had started to drop feeds your periods didn't return.

I'm wanting to get pregnant again as soon as I can (sounds crazy I know)
We had IVF for this baby and wanting to give my body a chance to fall naturally this time before having another round of IVF.

Just wanting to know other peoples experiences with breastfeeding and periods/fertility pp?

Thanks :)

I had no periods till 7 months after giving birth. Then they came back despite still regularly breastfeeding. It’s different for everyone though.

Mummyme87 · 26/09/2018 17:21

3-4months postnatal whilst ebf and periods were back 🙄

ISaySteadyOn · 26/09/2018 17:22

Mine returned at about that time and I was EBF too. I felt quite cheated tbh.

Also, I was tandem feeding DD1 and DD2 when I conceived DS. So bfing is not necessarily a bar to fertility. Just my experience.

With every single dc my period arrived at a month old.
Was gutted tbh!
Ebf and also ttc, managed to get a bfp when ds was 5 months old!

MattBerrysHair · 26/09/2018 17:26

My periods started again 4 weeks after giving birth, both times. I EBF Ds1 to 4.5 months and Ds2 to 7 months. I was most put out!

TatterdemalionAspie · 26/09/2018 17:31

Periods resumed 6 weeks post partum. The post natal bleeding had only just stopped, and when I started bleeding again, I thought my uterine infection had come back. Hmm That was despite exclusively breastfeeding a baby who never seemed to be off the boob, too!

Her0utdoors · 26/09/2018 17:31

OP, it's not uncommon for milk supply to drop conciderably at around 20 weeks pregnant, so you may want to bear that in mind depending on how long you hope to breastfeed for. Dd was 2 1/2 when I was finally pregnant again, so not so much of an issue!

I had twins 3 months early, expressed then breastfed them both round the clock. Missed 1 period after they were born and then they were back.

So for a twin pregnancy and 12 months breastfeeding, I missed a total of 7 periods. Bitter, who me?! Wink

My LO is 13 weeks and I had a period a week ago. I'm pretty gutted to be honest as I heard they don't come back until baby is around 6months if you re EBf. I've also noticed my boobs don't seem to get as full as they did prior to my period. I'm hoping my milk supply doesn't dry up.

stressedtiredbuthappy · 26/09/2018 20:58

I'm still breastfeeding at 2 1/2. Periods returned and were regular from 6 months.
I have very strong hormonal ups and downs too so have every reason to believe all is working well even though I'm 39 now.
I've not been trying so no idea about fertility.

DD2017 · 26/09/2018 21:03

EBF to 6months. Now eating meals & BF still @ 1yr old... no period (touch wood it continues)

DramaAlpaca · 26/09/2018 21:06

Mine came back at about 12 weeks postpartum & I was EBF. I was pregnant again a couple of months later with DC2, conceived while I was still breastfeeding.

calamariqueen · 26/09/2018 21:12

Mine started at 8 weeks when I was EBF my DDHmm wasn't impressed as I was on holiday!! I did notice she got quite fussy at the breast when I was premenstrual, apparently hormonal changes can change the taste of your milk.

mindutopia · 27/09/2018 09:13

My period came back at 12 weeks as well despite ebf. They didn’t even come back that soon with my first who was on bottles from 6 weeks!!

mindutopia · 27/09/2018 09:17

No idea about fertility as we are very much done after 2 babies and I have the coil, but I certainly have ovulated regularly every month as far as I can tell. The only thing I have noticed is my luteal phase is quite short (so ovulation usually later and then like a 9 day LP). I imagine this would make it unlikely that I could easily get pregnant anyway (even if I wasn’t desperately trying not too have any more babies!). You can always track your cycles and see what happens. No harm in trying!

Lazypuppy · 27/09/2018 10:50

I went back on birth control at 8 weeks post birth, so no idea what my body would have done.

My midwife told me that breastfeeding is not a guarnteed method of bieth control, so by that reasoning periods must be possible

pinkcarpet · 27/09/2018 10:54

I didn't have a period until DD1 was 2.5yrs old, about 6 months after i stopped breastfeeding. Still don't know why it took so long!

Kintan · 27/09/2018 10:58

It’s a myth that you don’t menstruate while you are ebf. Mine returned four month after birth, and I know two people who got pregnant while they were ebf. But everyone is different!

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/09/2018 10:59

I got pregnant again after 3 months of ebf DS1.

MaeBug · 29/09/2018 08:12

Hi!!
My little one is 6 months old on Sunday, I EBF and found out 2 days ago i'm 9 weeks pregnant!!
I had one period around 3 months after little one was born and that was that! x x
