Advice on bed guards

I cosleep with my 1yo. He has a habit of trying to crawl off the bed in his sleep. When I'm trying to get him to sleep he'll pull himself up to stand on the mattress or using the head board. At the moment we are piling cushions around the bed.

We are thinking of getting bed guards but I'm unsure if they might make things more dangerous. I'm terrified that DS might pull himself up on them and then topple over from an even greater height. Is that a likely scenario?

Can you put the mattress on the floor for a while? I did this until DS was around 2 and wouldn't be crawling around the bed so much.

We have an ottoman bed, so we'd lose out on storage space, and there's no room for both the bed and the mattress on the floor.

I still breastfeed him overnight which is why we cosleep. So it would have to be at least a double mattress on the floor.

I have this extra tall bed guard for this reason, my expert climber 2 year old has attempted to climb it but it's too high for him to get his leg up. I throughly recommend it, the instructions for how to put it together are shite so just ignore them and copy the picture!

@Mammatron that looks like a good buy - unfortunately our mattress is about 25cm thick 😥

We bought a new bed and mattress when I was pregnant.and desperate for a more comfortable nights sleep. I never expected to cosleep for so long though, and now I'm really regretting getting it!

Can you put the bed against the wall and sleep with ds nearest the wall, you in the middle, and your dp on the outside?

I got rid of the bed guard on the toddler bed when my daughter did exactly what you fear- climbed over, fell and broke her arm (and that was just from a toddler bed!). I'd put cushions or a bean bag on the floor next to the bed.

isabella2 thanks, that's awful to hear. Then I guess it's a no to bed guards from me as well.
