Ds is 7 months. He has had a few colds before and they do disrupt his sleep a little bit, with more night wakings, harder to settle etc.

He now has a cold again except this time he will not sleep he's been waking up every 1-2 hours the past two days and naps take up to an hour to even settle him enough to take 1 hour.

We have used the snot sucker on him, we've got a humidifier running with baby olbas in it, have given calpol, calpol plug in going, cot elevated at the head end. He's wrapped up nice n warm (but not too warm) white noise playing, dummy in. We've even tried feeding him to sleep which always works without fail but nope, not now.

Me and DH are so knackered, we've had about 5 hours sleep each in the past 2 days.

Help - anything?

From my own experience as someone who gets colds all the time, nothing really helps but the worst is the first 3 or 4 days so hopefully it will just pass

bobstersmum · 15/09/2018 09:46

Only thing I can suggest is try safely co sleeping while he's poorly, they often feel so awful they just want to be next to you and you can shush them before they stir too much. Colds are awful for little ones and night time is horrible.

stiltonontoast · 15/09/2018 09:56

@bobstersmum I'm not sure we can do that now, as we always bring him into our room in the morning when its time to be awake and his toys are in there - will he see it as too much of a awake time place?

I'm just desperate for him to sleep so worth a try I suppose.

What is his respiratory rate? Is he breathing fast? Can he feed? We are just entering the RSV season. Sometimes a cold can get worse.

MigGril · 15/09/2018 10:06

Try one of these
www.calpol.co.uk/our-products/calpol-vapour-plug-and-nightlight?psid_medium=cpc&psid_source=google&psid_term=%5Bcalpol%20plug%20in%5D&psid_content=text&psid_campaign=go-gb-eng-ps-calpol-bp-exa-rn-products
They are a life saver boots or Lloyds pharmacy (Sainsburys) often sell them.

Other then that do anything to survive with I'll children. You'll get them back into a routine when they are better.

MigGril · 15/09/2018 10:08

Oh yes and never hesitate to take them to the doctors to get checked out they are always more then happy to see little one's. Just in case.

bobstersmum · 15/09/2018 10:44

I think it's worth a try op. If you keep the lights off/low and don't chat to him or anything he'll know it's still bedtime. And if you are unsure I agree about getting him checked over.

stiltonontoast · 15/09/2018 11:43

Thanks @MigGril - we already have one! I have it plugged it at the mo, I hate the light on it tho? who thought that was a good idea!?

@endofthelinefinally I'd say his breathing seems fairly normal, just a bit 'chesty' sounding but I'll keep a good eye on it.

We've finally got him to have 1 hour nap this morning, I held him for 20 mins until he fell asleep on me and then I very carefully transferred him to the cot. Imagine he'll wake up any minute furious though.

My plan for tonight is to try a floor bed in his room!

If he isn't feeding due to breathlessness or blocked nose, be aware of dehydration.
DS2 got a bad cold at 4.5 months, which turned out to be rsv. He was in hospital for 3 days. If he seems chesty get him checked.

Redken24 · 15/09/2018 11:49

We taped over the light.

NewUserNameTime · 15/09/2018 12:01

Have you tried steam? Run the shower and take him into the bath for a bit, it can really help.

I love the Calpol plugs but read toy have one. Do you have Snuffle Baby? I don't think that was mentioned. It's the baby version of Vicks

MigGril · 15/09/2018 12:59

Yes tape over the light, I also don't know who though that was a good idea either. The older Vicks ones you could get (don't think they do them anymore) didn't have a light so I also use that one when I can find it.

stiltonontoast · 15/09/2018 18:10

Thanks everyone, i’ve taped over the light.
Yes we are using snufflebabe also!

Today he’s had a 2 hour nap and then an hour in the afternoon (after walking him in the buggy for an hour and a half!) he’s been fairly normal all day except for since about 5 he’s been crying quite a bit. I took his temp and it’s 38.8 so i’ve given him some inburprophen and put him to bed early - so far he’s just making noises.

It seems like a really bad cold. Horrible Sad
