How long does it take for breast milk to digest?

Hi everyone, my EBF 4 month old is in hospital at the moment and is having a CT scan today. I last fed him around 4am and they want to sedate him at 6am for the CT scan but wherever I look online it says 3-4 hours for breast milk to make sure it doesn’t go into the lungs.

Is 2 hours long enough? Will his tummy be empty by then? He had a big feed

sorry to hear your DS is in hospital - must be scary Flowers

did they not say how long before the scan for Nil by Mouth? if they didn't mention it, then it should be fine.

I am sure they will be watching him very carefully

Thank you. It’s been awful but I think the lumbar puncture was the worst of it. My brain hasn’t processed what’s going on properly yet, I’m far too tired

They originally said 6 hours, which they changed to 4 hours because it’s breastmilk but then changed it again because the person who runs the machine is on call. I’m just worried about it because everything I read on google says 3-4 NBM

{{{ hugs}}}

let them know - they will know if its okay or not (I would be erring on the side of fine - breastmilk is digested really quickly)

my DD had a lumbar puncture when she was about 18 months old. I will never ever forget it as long as live Sad - they were testing for meningitis but it was all fine in the end.

hope your DS is okay - I'm here if you want to keep talking Smile
have you had a Brew ?

Thank you. I know what you mean, there are no words for how awful that was.
I haven’t had much to drink and haven’t eaten in to days but I’ll grab something today if I can. He’s just had his ct scan so we’re waiting for results now. He looked so tiny in that big machine

fingers crossed the results are fine.

go and get something to eat and drink! you need to keep your strength, its so draining when babies are ill.
