3 year old who hates personal grooming

GemmaB78 · 13/09/2018 16:16

Help! I am at my wits end. 3 year old detests:
Bath
Shower
Hair washing
Hair brush
Toenail and fingernail trimming

And any other form of personal grooming. To the point where they result in a meltdown. Swimming is off the cards as well.

Any ideas?

for the nail cutting: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MF4IFAP/ref=twister_B01M4G3CS2?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21 this is a product that you wear, and file the nails instead of cutting them. might be worth a try, it could be thata the sight of scissors scares her.

for the bath, i know its not an ideal solution but maybe you could get some fun bubbles or bath toys? my dd loves bath crayons which she uses to draw on the side of the bath. it may entice her to want to get in the water and play. leave her for about 5 minutes before quickly soaping her down (maybe try telling her about yucky germs and mud- getting all clean for bed time- if she sleeps with a cuddly toy then say we don't want toy name to get germy from you do we?)

it hopefully will get better as she gets older. all the best, i'll link some useful products below.

We cut dd's hair as she wouldn't tolerate hair brushing and hair washing. Things improved A LOT and by the time she started school, she was ready for hair brushing etc

Bribery ! Have a bath and you can watch tv before bed . Pin him down for hair brushing, cut nails in sleep. It will improve don't worry . Make sure your relaxesd about it all so he doesn't feel like there's something to be scared of and be consistent with your approach 😉

Thanks all. It sounds like we are on the right tracks. He has copious amounts of toys, bubbles and bath crayons, and the only time he gets ice-cream (apart from on holiday!) is after a hair washing and bath). We don't get angry or stressed but we are firm as he gets downright disgusting at times!
