Should I supplement with formula?

Hi,

I've just gone and got my 6 month old weighed and they've dropped down the percentile chart. I'm exclusively bfing and up all night feeding.
Last month I went to get them weighed and he's gone down from between 75th-50th percentile to just above the 25th. This month he's below the 25th. I've been advised to go back in two weeks.
Don't think the hv didn't want to worry me but I am. I feel like all my effort to breastfeed but it's not working because he's not putting on enough weight.
Do I just resign myself to have to top off with formula? I'm not even sure he'll take a bottle.

Any advice?

Have you started weaning yet?

RP235 · 12/09/2018 15:53

Yep started weaning a couple of weeks ago. Just had a couple of spoonfuls of veg purée for tastes. From what I understand breast milk will be more calorific than other foods at the moment. xx

Babies weight can drop as they get more active.

But my 8month old has 4x 6oz bottles a day plus 3 full meals of food including toast, yoghurt, veg, meat, potato etc

Formula won't negate everything you've done with breastfeeding. It's not giving up at all. If I remember correctly I don't think a six month old will be eating enough to sneak in serious calories via food.

It's totally up to you, I personally would try adding in formula to see if it makes a difference. Maybe try doing a bedtime bottle?

Mine went from the 50th down to the 9th then back up to 25th when I started weaning (although at 3.5 she's now on the 2nd for height). My HV never seemed concerned but I would go back to the clinic if you are advised to do so and see what HV recommends
