Just speaking on phone to MIL:
"how's my grandson?" says she
"gorgeous as ever" says I
"is he losing any of that weight now he's walking?"
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH...................
" what weight would that be?"
"dont be defensive, lots of babies are fat"
"mmm, i know chubby babies are gorgeous, but ds is NOT FAT"
"well he's hardly petite is he? I dont think you realise how unusual it is for a child his age (14 mths)to have a whole weetabix for breakfast...in fact didnt you say he sometimes has banana with it? Thats more than i have for breakfast!"
And once again:
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH @&X45$X%&X&%X$(&&!!!!!!!
This is from the woman who, when hearing that ds weighed 7.7lb at birth, exclaimed
"no wonder you needed all those stitches, he's MASSIVE"

JeremyVile · 09/06/2007 16:22

Wopper, you old smoothie you
You remind me of a boy at my school (primary naturally)who demonstrated his fondness for me by following me round the playground, my pulling my hair and calling me a "ledspian"...
Its quite sweet really but honestly, run along.

But actually, i think you'll find that that noise is your mum calling you, shes back from asda and shes got your copy of Smash Hits and another box of Man Size Kleenex.

thing is kids often do need more than us for breakfast. they sleep longer than we do so go longer without food. and kids are always doing some sort of olympics in their sleep they must use up loads of energy. and they run around lots more so its no surprise they sometimes eat more is it.

pucca · 09/06/2007 19:14

@ JV!!

JeremyVile · 09/06/2007 19:25

Littlelapin, if i were to tell my Mil that she'd hunt you down armed with a stomach pump and a child supervision order!!
Ds had a mahoosive bowl of porridge this morning AND toast AND some of my muffin, if she was here it would have brought on the dry-heaves

I used to find it difficult to keep up with Ds2 at breakfast time when he was about that age Jeremy.

I think sometimes PILs forget that babies are slightly different than adults

JeremyVile · 09/06/2007 22:40

Yes, quite the charmer isn't she/he?

ScottishMummy · 09/06/2007 22:48

LOL i empathise

my boyfriend mum is similarily minded obsessed by weight and derisory comments eg

baby is fat
bubba eat how much???

anyway for record today bubba ate
bowl of porridge
half my ypghurt
half a weetabix

i give bubba one weetabix for brekkie

allgonebellyup · 10/06/2007 15:49

Pinktulips - think you are so right about large babies being slim adults and vice versa! i was 11lb when born, as was my brother, now i am a tallish size 8-10 after 2 kids and i eat loads of crap all day long!
Also my dd (nearly 8)was over 9lb and is now a skinny sporty little whippet, and ds nearly 10lb..
and i know adults who are obese and like to boast what tiny babies they were!!

allgonebellyup · 10/06/2007 15:50

JV your son is not even chubby! he is gorgeous..

fryalot · 10/06/2007 15:55

I've had this before with ds. He has a naturally round face. He is not fat.

He is 21 months old and his clothes (12 - 18 months) are loose around the waist. He is not a fat kid.

Yet because he has a round face, he is always called fat, a little porker, a big lad, chunky - you know all the euphemisms for fat.

He has the most beautiful bright blue eyes and a smile that lights up your whole day, but all anyone can see is that he is fat.

(he's on my profile, btw if you want a look) but he is not fat.

grr

liisa · 10/06/2007 16:23

take no notice, some people have such ridiculous opinions. my son used to eat a whole weetabix and whole banana for brekky at that age. he's 26 months now and has 2 weetabix, banana and scrounges my branflakes too :-) xx

JeremyVile · 10/06/2007 16:29

Squonk - your ds is beautiful, the mind boggles about some people it really does.

JeremyVile · 10/06/2007 16:29

Allgonebellyup - thankyou

fryalot · 10/06/2007 16:44

of course, when I'm trying to persuade people that he's not fat, you have to ignore the photo of him with chocolate ALL OVER his face thank you, I think he's a bit gorgeous.

And your ds is himself a lovely little lad.... really gorgeous

Sparkletastic · 10/06/2007 16:57

JV your DS is totally beautiful and his BMI is spot-on by the looks of him. Loving your work on this thread in the face of some provocation and loving you in general. Uh-oh having a 'Ledspian' moment . My MIL is exactly the same - she suspects DD1 of being anorexic (at 4 yrs) as DD1 finds eating a bit of a bore, DD2 (13 mths) is branded chubby and food-obsessed. MIL is morbidly obese BTW .

NineUnlikelyTales · 10/06/2007 17:21

Squonk I can't find the fat faced child in your profile - they're all gorgeous. What is it with people and their bizarre/rude comments?

JeremyVile · 10/06/2007 17:34

Aawwwww, Sparkltastic!!!!
I'm blushing......
All over
