Just speaking on phone to MIL:
"how's my grandson?" says she
"gorgeous as ever" says I
"is he losing any of that weight now he's walking?"
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH...................
" what weight would that be?"
"dont be defensive, lots of babies are fat"
"mmm, i know chubby babies are gorgeous, but ds is NOT FAT"
"well he's hardly petite is he? I dont think you realise how unusual it is for a child his age (14 mths)to have a whole weetabix for breakfast...in fact didnt you say he sometimes has banana with it? Thats more than i have for breakfast!"
And once again:
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH @&X45$X%&X&%X$(&&!!!!!!!
This is from the woman who, when hearing that ds weighed 7.7lb at birth, exclaimed
"no wonder you needed all those stitches, he's MASSIVE"

Talk about giving kids food issues before they are out of nappies.....

skidaddle · 08/06/2007 18:00

You are a saint for not screaming down the phone to her!

Well my own mother is as bad - conversation with someone looking at a photo of my lovely dd

person - oh she's beautiful
my mother - oh for God's sake she's not beautiful, she's fat and she's got a big flat pale face

Recounted to me by my mother

I sometimes think I spent the first year and a half of ds's life mostly listening to my mother going on about how fat he was

She managed to construct a theory that he was too fat because I was breastfeeding him too often (ie, on demand)

she backed this up by saying "if you had had twins he wouldn't have had all that milk, he isn't meant to get the whole lot and you keep giving it to him"

Now he is 4 she mostly spends her time trying to get him to finish his plateful and speculating about how pale he is

I advise you to master the polite glazed smile and the ears that aren't listening, earlier than I managed to

My mother was very wise. She supported whatever our choices were. We were very lucky.

saralou · 08/06/2007 18:38

, i think ds could eat 3 weetabix in one sitting at this age (he has 2 now)

i love chunky baby's... love love love 'em! spent the afternoon with my friends baby who is solid chunk and i could have eaten him

Cascara · 08/06/2007 18:41

I refuse to get into weight comments with either my mum or my MiL. Neither are that bad, but I've told them I do not wish to have mention weight in front of ds and then I moved onto a dismissive "mmm" or just ignoring/changing the subject.

I remember my mum once told me that when my brother was younger he asked what the perfect woman was like and she gave him measurements. My jaw actually dropped. When I recvered I did go on a bit of a rant.

ruddynorah · 08/06/2007 18:42

lol at the twin theory f&z!!

coleyboy · 08/06/2007 18:45

God, why do batty old people think they can say these sort of things, and think they're not being rude!!!

No doubt your MIL told you you put on too much weight whilst you were pg!

DS is 10mo and has been known to eat a whole weetabix, followed by loads of my toast - cos someone else's breakfast always tastes better than your own!!

Booboobedoo · 08/06/2007 18:49

My DS is only 12 weeks and was 6lb 4oz at birth. He's soley breast-fed, and is growing nicely along his little centile line.

Every time MIL phones she bawls 'is he still skinny?' then starts wittering on about how she could express 8 pints a day or something.

I too am trying to perfect the glazed smile.

ROFL at the twin theory, F&Z. excellent work.

RosaLuxembourg · 08/06/2007 21:19

My mum phoned me up recently to ask me whether my 9-yr-old neice was abnormal because she ate a whole tin of tuna for lunch (and some sweetcorn, no bread or anything). I said yes perfectly normal but she insisted that no child needed to eat that much. Eh?

wrinklytum · 08/06/2007 21:19

Ignore her.Mine is bats in quite a nice way really, but I do remember her giving ds sugar and water one day"Oh this will sort out the wind!" when ds was 3 months.Frequently tells me that dd (18 months and a bit laid back) "Should be walking by now,it must be those wood floors you have that are slippy making her scared" ,that women should not breastfeed past a year and that dd should be potty trained by now

pucca · 08/06/2007 21:22

I had a growth scan when pg with my ds, and on hearing he was estimated at 7.5lbs @32 weeks, she said "ooh you will have to make sure he doesn't end up fat, you will have to cut back on the feeds a bit"

WTF?!

He was born @ 38weeks weighing in at 9lb 6oz, but he is long/tall too, so certainly isn't fat!

JeremyVile · 08/06/2007 21:26

^For us all,
Think they're all just jealous cos we have been blessed with such gorgeous babies (cos really, on top of already being blessed with looks, wit, humility etc dont we just have all the luck?!)

Troll or troublecauser- take your pick.

Aitch · 09/06/2007 00:33

lol wopper, you wee freak. has your mum been letting you at the fizzy pop?

mozhe · 09/06/2007 00:34

Do you mean...some mothers DO overfeed their children, whooper ?
If so I agree,( not implying you...tho' the mummy who gives x2 weetabix to a 9 month old...!! ).Later/BLW cuts down on this happening....babies really don't need much solid food in their first year.I'm firmly coninced that breastmilk is ideal food for under 2s, and letting children feed themselves from food offered to the rest of the family means they can 'top up' what they need.
You do see parents literally shovelling bucketloads of gloop into tiny little people...not good.
