Washing for newborns

Hi - I read somewhere on MN that you should wash real nappies three times at 60 before using on a newborn. Is this true? And what about second hand ones? And does this also apply to other items of clothing etc? I've washed everything but only at 40 in non-bio and once only.

Just posted similar in good housekeeping but then thought maybe this was better place.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Spoke too soon, already learned from Good Housekeeping the washing three times thing is about absorbancy. Phew, I don't have to order 73 more packets of soap powder after all

Before DS was born I washed everything and IRONED it too. Was convinced my child would never be glad in anything other than pristine white, crisply ironed cotton.

2 days after birth DS had shat and puked his way through every single item in his layette. In despair I started ripping open presents and putting them on DS straight out of the bag! The horror!

Needless to say, he survived

i did the same with my dd - nested like a cleaniac! - with my 2nd i didnt at all - didnt wash a thing and then even though he was 10 days late when we bought him home we realised we had no blankets for his moses basket, the monitor was broken and we had no baby vests to fit him as he was alot bigger than expected so he had to wear myy dd's old pink ones first day home lol!!!
