Ranitidine side effects?

Hi, my baby has been prescribed ranitidine for reflux (at my request), but now I’m worried after reading it can give babies headache and constipation.

Has anybody experienced any negative side effects from this?

No, nothing at all, even though my son was a bit prone to constipation before he went on ranitidine. It was brilliant for us

I didn't notice any side effects, other than my DD was much much happier and settled when she used to take it! Thankfully she didn't need it after she was 6 months!

Thank you. We decided to go ahead but he hasn’t pooped since he went on it. He’s breastfed and usually poops once a day but he hasn’t at all since and isn’t sleeping very well... on the other hand he’s a lot more content during the day!

I really don’t know what to do

How old is he?

If he's over 6 months, you could try him with some prune purée and water. If he's younger, try moving his legs in a cycling motion. That should hopefully get things moving. 💩

He’s 16 weeks. I went to the pharmacy and they gave me lactulose (can he have lactose if he’s cows milk protein sensitive? I never noticed before I gave it to him Confused ).
I’ve tried bicycle legs, warm baths, holding him in certain positions etc. Nothing seems to be working

Lactulose is different to lactose. It contains no protein so should not be a problem. If your baby is only breastfed, then he is unlikely to become too constipated. My DD stopped pooping when given infant gaviscon. I was told it would not be a problem if she did not poo for a week. Just be ready for an amazing quantity when he does go!

We saw no side effect from ranitidine for either of my DDs.

You’re right! I rang the pharmacy and she said it should be okay. I’ve given him some lactulose but won’t give him anymore and just wait a couple more days. I’m just worried because he’s clearly uncomfortable with it but he’s just a different child during the day, he’s so content and it’s so much easier. Before the ranitidine he was constantly crying or whinging so I can’t just stop giving it to him... although I am giving him less doses than he was prescribed, but he seems happy with it
