DD getting frustrated when reading

She's 5 and just started year 1. She got a school book today and we were reading it together but straight away she was trying to guess the words and started crying because she didn't know them. How can I help her?

If she's just started year 1 does that mean she has been reading in reception last year? How did she do then? My DD was fine reading the very early 1 word to a page books then struggled when she moved on to books with more words. She seemed to be trying to guess at them and got really frustrated. We had her eyes tested and it turned out she needed quite strong glasses- I'm amazed she could read anything!

Then back off from this till she is ready - just read to her lots and occasionally (but not too often) point out something (like two oo's saying oo). She is not ready and if it becomes a battle she will be put off for good.

Back off! And tell the school why you are doing this. Teachers fully understand about this.

@nomorepeoplepleasing yeah she was ok in reception. She would still try to guess but wouldn't get upset about it or anything. Her eyes have been tested and they're fine.

@mishappening yeah I think I will. I didn't pressure her or anything and she had said to me she wanted to read it. She has always enjoyed being read to since she was a baby and I've always read 2 books to her every night.
