Give him something else to kick - ball or cushion?

When does he say he is going to kick?
ie: is it when he is tired, cross, attention seeking, bored etc?

How do you usually discipline him?
Time out can be really effective for diffusing physical situations.
I think I would take off his shoes, and remove him from the room for 3 minutes.
