Hi

I’ve been stressing out now for a few days now.... I recently went out to Mexico for my sisters wedding, all inclusive for 2 weeks we were drinking most days and very drunk on a few occasions plus we had pre wedding bashes before we went, When I returned home I have discovered that I am pregnant total shock as I was on the pill. I’m now worried sick that I’ve done damage to my baby as I drank up to 7 weeks. I’ve been googling and read that most damage can be done at this embryonic stage! Which I have basically drank all the way through.
I have stopped straight away soon as I knew but just worried it’s too late,
Did anyone else do this?? And was it all ok?? I’m not just talking a glass of wine but 2 or 3 large glasses followed by vodkas etc etc. And 3 bottes of procecco on one occasion before we went, Plus Mexican measures arnt small!
I feel terrible about it now but as I was on the pill and not TTC I just didn’t know.

I think a lot of people drink at the beginning of an unplanned pregnancy - myself included! My baby turned out just fine, as do many others. It's unlikely that you have done much damage, although not impossible, but you can't change what's been done. I am no expert but I thought that more damage could be caused when the baby shares your bloodstream via the umbilical chord, which hasn't happened yet - I may have got this completely wrong, perhaps someone else will correct me.

The best you can do right now is to focus on a healthy pregnancy from this point on. Share your concerns with your midwife when you have your next appointment. I am sure they hear this all the time and will be able to put your mind at rest.

I was unknowingly pregnant over new year and hardly drank. It’s funny how you can seem to subconsciously know. Nothing you can do about it now so try not to worry and congrats!

Hi Op,
Try not to work worry too much, a lot of babies are conceived when people have been drinking. A friend of mine also on the pill had the exact same situation, been out drinking on numerous occasions and on the pill - found out at nearly 4 months. The one thing I would suggest is buy folic acid and start taking this straight away along with a multi vitamin that contains vitamin D.
Congratulations btw xx

I drank at the beginning of my second pregnancy, heavily, and I never usually drink at all so my body was probably quite overwhelmed! I never knew I was pregnant. However now my second child is 7 and he’s very intelligent and lovely.

Thank u, I got multi vitamins straight away and have been taking them for the past 3 weeks.

You will need to highlight to your midwife that you were in Mexico due to zika virus it's low chance given you were just there on holiday but they may need to do extra monitoring/scans as it's pregnant women most at risk.

I think for the first few weeks the baby is living off nutrients from the yolk sac rather than anything passing to it from you - so try not too worry too much! Soooo many people must have done this, and probably for much longer than 7 weeks as well. I'm sure all will be fine, but as PP mentioned just flag to your MW about being in Mexico.

I didn't know until I was 13 weeks, and I had quite a few big celebrations in that time and was drinking and I was a smoker. I felt terrible when they doc told me. I stopped both straight away, ate healthy, took all the vitamins and looked after myself and bump.
My DS is great, he is alert, walking at 10.5 months, beautiful and happy. Try not to dwell on it too much that you don't enjoy the pregnancy and don't beat yourself up, and don't google to much to hear all the negativity and horror stories.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and enjoy it,
