DD school uniform tantrum AIBU

Was in M&S yesterday doing the dreaded school uniform shopping and DD chose a tight fitting mini skirt and put it in the trolley. DD is 9 years old and I immediately had visions of her being cat called by men in cars.

Told her "oh you won't be able to run and jump and play very well in that, it's too teeny!" And put it back.

DD burst into tears. I couldn't tell her the real reason for my saying no.

I feel really bad. My daughter should be able to wear what she wants from the school uniform section, but in my own experience, it only takes one man to whistle or approach her doesn't it.

We live 2 minutes from school and she's now getting to be at the age where she can walk most of the way by herself.

Am I being unreasonable with the skirt?

Most schools don't allow mini skirts anyway. They have to be a certain length. Have you checked the rules for your school?

Cat called by men on cars? At age 9? Wow. Where do you live? Nonce City??? Shock

Harken53rig · 21/08/2018 09:34

Why do they even do tight fitting mini skirts in age 9? Hmm

At that age they have to sit on the floor for assembly and various other things, do cartwheels on the field, climb play equipment. A mini skirt is not practical school uniform for any 9 yo.

Are you kidding ??? You gave her the correct reasons why she couldn't have the skirt !!!! She's 9 FFS!!!

Kingkiller · 21/08/2018 09:36

Tight mini skirts are impractical and not appropriate for school. Why on earth should she be able to wear anything she likes from the school uniform section if it's not actually appropriate for school? Nothing to do with catcalling and whistling men.

Cat calling at 9 years old??!!

AngelsAckiz · 21/08/2018 09:41

I've had friends whose children have been cat called.

You're right about school uniform rules, I didn't consider that. I just trust marks and Spencer. I was a bit surprised they stock miniskirts tbh.

Dear me! These skirts are very fashionable. However your reasoning is really appalling. Most men don't cat call and certainly not to 9 year olds

Redisthemagicolour · 21/08/2018 09:42

Was it actually a mini skirt? Or just a pencil skirt to the knee or just above? In stretchy material? I’d let my 9 year old wear one (and figure out for herself it’s not practical). I wouldn’t let her wear a mini skirt to school. And I wouldn’t let her walk on her own if there was a likelihood of catcalling in your neighbourhood.

AngelsAckiz · 21/08/2018 10:24

Green tulips: "most men" like I have say, only takes one. And in my experience there are going to be the odd one.
Thinking mainly about paedophiles. There have been busts in the town just recently and all schools were put on high alert after vans seen and men approaching girls. We had two letters about being vigilant.

I wouldn’t allow a 9yo to wear a mini skirt under any circumstances, especially not to school.

GreenTulips · 21/08/2018 10:37

These men will approach girls regardless of their skirt type or length.

Talk about victims blaming

llangennith · 21/08/2018 10:54

Are they allowed to wear trousers to school?

leccybill · 21/08/2018 10:57

9 year olds are a bit old to be bursting into tears about not getting their own way?

ThePricklySheep · 21/08/2018 11:00

The Marks and Spencer stretchy skirts are marked as ‘senior school’ and start at age 9-10.

Haworthia · 21/08/2018 11:01

You told her it was too tight to run and play, which is correct. So what if you didn’t mention that you found it inappropriate? There’s no way I’d let my daughter wear a tight mini skirt at 9 either.
