Toileting

My daughter is starting school in a couple of weeks time. We started potty training her when she turned two, she is five after Christmas and she still wets herself multiple times a day. She has never asked to go to the toilet and relies on us taking her. We are at our wits end. We have tried everything from reward charts, books, to recently purchasing a watch that vibrates at certain times during the day to encourage her to go. She is also taking laxative prescribed from the doctor. We can’t seem to find any advice on this, there is a lot online about regression with the toilet but none about children who haven’t got it! Otherwise she is a bright child and we have no concerns. Would love to hear if anyone else has experienced this and has any helpful advice. We have been to our health visitor, doctor and a paediatrician and have had no help on the matter. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

How have you been training her for the past 2years?

I would take her back to the drs and demand help.

Have you spoken to the school?

Contact ERIC. Sounds to me like she's quite possibly constipated - and if she IS constipated then she needs more than just a sachet of movicol daily thrown at the problem... DD2 gets like this, to the point she's wetting multiple times a day when she constipates up and needs disimpaction.

GPs tend to be shit with this - might get more help from the HV team in terms of them passing you onto their continence specialists (some places have it as a separate team still - our area's merged HV, school nurses and continence nurses all into one big team together).

Thank you. I had to wait for a year for another appointment at the hospital and they have told me they can’t do anything until she is 6. I haven’t heard of anyone else experiencing it and it is very disheartening. I’m going to contact the dr again this week. Emailed Eric but unfortunately didn’t get a response. Thanks for the reply.

I second the advice about contacting ERIC - call their helpline instead of emailing them, I think they struggle with the volume of emails they receive, but when I called and left a message they came straight back to me. Really friendly and helpful.

Thanks so much will phone Eric tomo. Keep thinking it will improve but it has been going on for so long now. With the benefit of hindsight I probably started to train her too young and she has never got it! 😫
