When to stop using a cup with a lid?

DS1 is just 4 but has drinks from an open plastic cup (no handles) at meal times when at the table but then I have laminate flooring in the dining room. When he is in the lounge I give him an anyway up cup to save my carpet from spills.
He starts school in September so don't want him seeing himself as "different" from the other children. I personally don't mind him having the cup it is the whole peer pressure thang
At what age did your DCs give up using a cup and did you transition onto the cup with integral straw etc?
I am aware this is trivial but I am obsessive
Thanks

my ds is 2.4 and has just ordinary cups with no handles as i just gave him one one day and he was fine with it so thought there was no point in going back.

If he can handle a normal cup at dinner time he should be ok at any other time. my ds has spilages every so often, but then so do i!

my ds still has an anyway up cup for bed time which i need to break him away from soon

Definitely get rid of any lids!!

my dd is 3.7years and also uses an open cup at meals. When she is in other rooms she uses a cup with a sports cap thing or a cup with a lid that a straw goes through (my carpet is messy enough without adding spillages to it!!) - both types bought from the supermarket/woolies, etc

If you're worried about spillage why not give him a sports bottle -less babyish

I still give ds1 a lidded cup, and he is 4, starts school in September.

I also give him a sports bottle to take out with him.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your replies. I'll definitely be going down the sports cup route, I think.
