Today 06:10 Mummystarks

Hi. My boy is just over 7 months and for a few weeks now he has been randomly having the worst temper tantrums I have ever seen from a baby so young. Even my Mum, who had 2 children can't believe he gets so worked up and like me, is concerned this may mean he has some kind of problem. He has just got his first tooth through and is now cutting his second and third and has just learnt to crawl but often his tantrums are when he wants to get to something but he's 'forgotten' how to get there or just doesn't seem confident in his ability to crawl just yet? This morning he woke up at 4:30 (very unusual) he was happy at first, just babbling away in his cot. Then when I tried to get him back to sleep he started crying. I spent half an hour trying without success so figured I'd leave the room and see if he'd just settle himself (he was getting quieter and yawning lots by this point)... Big mistake! He threw a full on tantrum, screaming and kicking and throwing himself around the cot. I let him do it for around 10 minutes then my partner went in, picked him up and tried to calm him by cuddling but it took all together around an hour to calm him, then he fell asleep so was put in his cot but instantly woke up again and cried for around 3 minutes until he fell asleep. Occasionally he will cry when I take something away he can't have but then he is easily distracted by something else. This temper however, is incredible and he is too strong to hold when it's happening. I am covered in bruises from his tantrums and honestly don't know the best way to deal with them. I find myself losing my own temper sometimes and raising my voice and then I hate myself. Please help.

I think describing them as ‘temper tantrums’ isn’t a useful way to think about this at 7 months old. It’s going to set this up in your mind as anger or even bad behaviour, but really he’s too little to have tantrums in the same way a furious 3-year-old would.

It sounds like he gets upset fast and then doesn’t calm down easy. Like this morning when you left the room, he’s just at the age when separation anxiety kicks in so he’s upset that you left. Some babies will calm down by themselves but some just get themselves more and more upset and worked up, and the more upset they get the harder it is for them to calm down. If he was 3 and angry you might say “okay, I’ll come back when you’ve calmed down” and leave him to rage it out, but it’s not the same behaviour at 7 months so that approach won’t work.

I don’t think it means he has some sort of problem, some babies are just like this. Mine was as a baby but was a lot calmer as a toddler.
