Hi my 2.5 yr old daughter is talking few words but most of the time she is babbling. It is hard for her at daycare to convey what she wants to her daycare teacher and if they couldnt understand she satrted to cry and she ll cry for the entire daycare time. And she is not sitting and playing at daycare. Teacher is complaining about her all day. Im so worried that she is talking at all. I stopped putting her TV in past few weeks totally and im playing , talking with her almost all the time. Still i couldnt see much difference in her speech. Im totally worried and my husband is not ready to put her on early intervention as he says she ll talk as time goes. Am i worrying too much? I feel worry that what if she has ADHD...

Firstly, I wouldn’t be happy if the Nursery are complaining about her and she’s frying all day. Does she have to go to Nusery?

Are you in the UK OP? If so, you can self refer to Speech & Language Therapy. I know your DH isn’t keen but he doesn’t have to spend all day in an environment where he’s upset and nobody understands him.

There’s some information on improving speech here and if she has a dummy, I’d together her to take it out when she speaks or when she plays. I’d also get her hearing checked, just to rule out low hearing.

Is there a particular reason you suspect ADHD? Have the Nursery said anything?

Early intervention is there to get the best outcome for your child. I think is neglectful to not assess help that your child needs.

Has his hearing been tested?

What on earth could even be wrong with intervention? It's not invasive?!

Talk to your HV. Ask for a hearing test. Ask if they think a SALT referral would be appropriate. I wouldnt leap to ADHD from what you say here - is there anything else you are worried about?

I wouldn't worry about ADHD, it's entirely treatable. Go for the early intervention, it's not brain surgery, it's a very gentle speech therapy.

I wouldn't be happy with her daycare provider complaining about her all day, it's very unprofessional and I would find somewhere else.

In our local children’s centre there is a chattertime class run by a hospital speech therapist. Perhaps that could be a first port of call? They can normally advise and refer to other departments. I agree early intervention can make all the difference.
