Separation and 2.5yr old

I ended the relationship with my partner about 6wks ago, he has moved out of the family home, we have a 2.5yr old son and I am 4 months pregnant with the second.
My son had a strange relationship with his dad, he clearly loves him but I think years of anger and unpredictablity from my partner has somewhat damaged their relationship.
Long story short.....little lad has adapted really well to his dad not being here, still sees him nearly every day and once dad has suitable accommodation sorted, we’re aiming towards alternate weekends etc
But.....what do you tell a child that age about separation? He rarely asks where his dad is but on the occasions he does I say he’s working, am I doing the right thing? He knows his dad doesn’t sleep here anymore and seems fine with that but I don’t know if I should be telling him mummy and daddy don’t live together anymore? Do I just continue and go with the flow?!
