Formula prep when out and about

Hi everyone,

Looking for some opinions on making up bottles.

I've got an 8 week old girl and I'm using C&G formula. We have got a prep machine at home. When I am out and about at the moment I'm boiling water in a kettle, putting it into the Tomee Tipee flask and then taking formula in a little box - when it comes to feeding I then put the scoops in the bottle and add hot water from flask & wait to cool before feeding. (She doesn't need to have it warmed up).

Although this works fine I was told today by another momma that she boils the water in the morning and lets it cool, adds the cool boiled water to a bottle. Then when ready for feed she adds formula then adds a smaller amount of boiling water out flask. This I guess means I'm not waiting for it to cool down for as long. She did suggest that as my little girl doesn't need it warmed up I could just take bottles with cool boiled water out with me, then add formula and feed her straight away.

I wanted to see what other people do and see if the above method is OK?

No it’s not. You need to use hot water to kill the bacteria in the formula. You can do your own perfect prep. So take a bottle, measured out cold water in another bottle, measured out formula and hot water. Put 2 oz of hot water in bottle, add the formula and mix and then add your pre measured cooled 4 oz of water. Change ratio as needed.

Or buy premade cartoons.

When we were bottle feeding my kiddies, many years ago, we would boil and cook the water and fill all the bottles needed for the day to a particular mark ready to be used. If we were home I’d boil the jug with fresh water and top up the bottle to the correct level then add the formula. When out I would carry boiled water in a thermos and do the same thing - add correct amount of hot water to get bottle to correct level and add formula. We worked out the ratio of cold to hot so the bottle was always the right temp for Bub. Also filled thermos with freshly boiled water in the evening before going to bed so we could make up the bottles in the night for feeds

I used to use the premade UHT cartons of formula when out and about with my bottle fed baby.

The ready made formula is more expensive than the powdered formula, but there’s no need to worry about preparing it wrong when out.

I always used cartons when out apart from a few long weeks when DS was on lactose free formula.

I used to make up the bottles one or two in advance, flash cool and then refrigerate them; sometimes I'd put one in a cool bag with an ice pack and take that with me, along with a clean bottle and a uht carton of the pre-made stuff.

I make the bottle up before we go oit and put in bottle warmer that came with my changing bag. Perfect drinking temperature after about 90mins, or quicker if i take it out.

Or i just take acold one from the fridge and heat it up ifi know there is a microwave (like if we are going to a cafe/restaurant)
