potty phobia

My son, aged 2yrs8months, has developed a major phobia of his potty and toilet seat. Two months ago he was weeing into the potty and the toilet on a regular basis, before every bath and most mornings. We thought we were doing really well and were just buying "big boy pants" etc. Then he did a poo in the potty and its all gone wrong!!! Now he is totally freaked out and wants nothing more to do with it! We have been very positive and given him lots of praise. When he got freaked out we put the whole thing aside for several weeks. However he seems to have developed such a negative opinion that I'm not sure how to help him overcome this. He seems frightened of the whole thing and we're not sure why as he's only had praise. Does anyone have any good ideas to get back to at least preparing for potty training as leaving it for a few weeks has made no difference.

Let him chose a potty if he has fear of his existing one?
I'm lucky that DS1 hasn't developed a fear yet, he's dry during the day atm. He's 2.3

Hi there, not much advice but I think sometimes when they are potty training the pooing side of things can alarm them a bit.

DS took ages to potty train re pooing but was great with weeing.Have you tried a toilet seat .I found with ds that when he showed signs of pooing I put him on the toilet, and tried to distract him by reading books, doing funny rhymes and songs. He did get there eventually and is now not bothered at all.

I think he potty trained with weeing at around the same age as your ds but was about 3 with the poo issue!!!He is now 3.5 and more or less dry at night bar the occasional accident.Letting him choose a potty sounds a good idea

He will get there-keep repeating to yourself"Its just a phase" x100.TRY not to stress about it,harder said than done,I know.

Hope someone will be along with more useful advice soon.
Good luck.
