Toddler beds

I've ordered my 20 month old son a toddler bed, he currently always sleeps in a travel cot. I have no issue putting him into his new toddler bed, but I'm just really undecided on weather to buy some sides for the bed..
as it is low anyway and I know in the morning he will get out and come into my room...
Can I have some others opinions on what you've done or what you suggest? 

We used a bed guard to start with from Amazon. The other side is against the wall. He's 3 and a half now and he still falls out of bed sometimes! Luckily it's low so he doesn't hurt himself.

We put ds in his toddler bed at 17 months. We never bothered with bed guards, didn't need them and I don't see the point of them. The first few nights we put the cot mattress on the floor in case. He rolled out once the first night and once the second night. After that he was fine. He loved it. He has a gate at his door, so he can't go anywhere. But he's stayed in bed until the morning from night three.
(He went in his bed in February last year, so it's been a long time now),
