Appologies in advance, this is not meant to be a commercial, it's just that I have spent a life time worrying about how expensive is to call the family when they live abroad, so after trying many different companies I found an extremely cheap one and thought of letting you know about it, can't believe I can talk for 50min to Mexico for just £1 so in case it's of use to anyone, here it is:

www.18866.co.uk

PS. And no, I don't get anything if you sign up.

It's OK, Chandra, I've been putting this one about too, it's fantastic - only 1p a minute to many countries - and no, I don't get anything either!

You can also call any UK mobile for 2p a min at the weekend and 10p a min the rest of the time, and UK landline calls are 0.5p per minute. (But if you have one of the BT packages, then their 6p per hour is cheaper at off-peak, so don't keep 18866 in the memory for any numbers you ring in the evenings/weekends.)

The one that amazes (and annoys if I'm honest!) me the most is calls to US mobiles - are you sitting down? 1p per minute. How can they do that????

mumsnet, can you hook in to a link to 18866 so you get a bit for everyone who signs up?

Wow that's incredible. I just checked out the site and found that calls to Australia are 1p per minute!!!and only 1p connection! I thought we were on a goo deal from onetel (4p per minute to Oz)
Will have to tell dh and maybe change over

JanH · 13/08/2004 20:47

This page has all the rates. Chandra, it says Mexico is 1p a minute too, landlines and mobiles, you should only pay 50p for 50 mins (well 51p, they charge 1p per connection.)

BT charges for calling UK mobiles - took me ages to find it so stick it in your favourites!

Except for calls to Vodafone in the evenings, 18866 is cheaper. (Oh, and Orange in the evening after Aug 31. If you don't have Together it will be more - or does everybody have to have Together now?)

ALSO, forgot to mention, 18866 only charge 1p connection, BT charge 5p; so if you're only on for a few seconds because the person you want isn't there, it's far cheaper.

if you don't mind installing software (and have a microphone on your computer) and can get the person you want to call to install it too then Skype gives you FREE voice over internet anywhere in the world. It works really well - my dp has been using it for a few months to communicate with US friends and it's saved us loads. It allows conference calling too.

Hi august24 the number is 08717727070, the good thing about this number is that it come's direct onto your telephone bill. Just dail that number than wait for the lady to finish speaking than dail the number you wish to call, finishing by pressing the hash key.
