Reflux & Milk Choices!

Our new baby (5 weeks old) is having bother with reflux.

We have him on SMA milk.

We've been told that the SMA comfort milk is good for this, but today I noticed the SMA anti reflux milk!

Now me and my partner are a bit unsure which way to go!

She wants to use the comfort, I want to try the anti reflux.

Does anyone have any experience of either they could help us with?

Bearing in mind neither of us have used either!

Thanks!

Who has suggested Comfort milk and what were their reasons OP? Have you looked up the difference between these 2 milks?

What symptoms does your LO have at the moment?

My DD is now 9 weeks but started having trouble with reflux about 3/4 weeks old.

She was on Cow and Gate, so we moved her onto the Cow and Gate Anti-Reflux milk which has solved the reflux problem completely. However, the milk is so much thicker which, although means it doesn't come back up, caused really bad constipation for my DD. I took her to the doctors who prescribed lactulose which works a treat. I didn't really want to medicate her at that age but she's so much more settled with this milk and thankfully has no reflux/constipation issues anymore.

Reflux is a complex issue so there is no best fit answer.

For many kids, reflux is a sign of cows milk allergy in which case the choice of milk is irrelevant as thy will all cause issues (often after a few weeks as it builds up in the system). So consider this and monitor for signs of milk allergy.

The antireflux milks are thicker so stay down better - all much of a muchness. Can cause constipation.

Comfort milk is gentler and partially processed - less help with reflux and more for wind issues.

Gaviscon given alongside normal milks acts as a thickener in the milk - may cause constipation.

Medicines - ranitidine and omeprazole can be prescribed by gp/paediatrician if it's not improving or long term causing failure to thrive.

Our best combination was gaviscon, neocate allergy milk and ranitidine.....but have done/used every single thing mentioned above at some point so have a basic knowledge of them all!

Also, raised cot and keeping them upright for a good 20mins after each feed does really help.

SMA Anti reflux milk saved my life! 🙌🏼

My DD (who is now 6 months) refused normal milk from about 8 weeks and she threw up comfort milk even with Gaviscon.

She was finally prescribed Ranitidine, but we were told to carry on with the comfort milk.

We were also advised by the HV to early wean at 5 months, but she struggled as she wasn't ready and wouldn't really eat anything. So my DH and I decided to try SMA Anti Reflux milk and swap from TT bottles to MAM. I can honestly say it's the best thing we ever did, she's come on so much since we changed.

She went from drinking 300ml a day to nearly 1000ml and is always happy and satisfied. We've now started weaning and she's enjoying her milk and her food!

Good luck OP, reflux is a son of a bitch!
