Recommend a stylish high chair?

I like the look of the Tripp Trapp but it's far too expensive and I'm worried by the YouTube video of it tipping over. Also like the look of the Budtz Bendix chair and the iCandy Michair, but again too expensive. The Plan Toys high chair is better priced but doesn't have an optional tray.

Can anyone recommend a high chair that's aesthetically pleasing and doesn't cost the earth? The most I can spend is about £150 but all I can find for that budget is hideous brightly coloured plastic chairs.

I have the ickle bubba orb high chair baby DD loves it and it's easy to clean as the table comes off

Honestly I would just go for the Ikea highchair, there is a reason it is so popular. You can always pop it away when not being used.

CanaBanana · 22/06/2018 09:17

Don't want to faff about putting the chair away 3 times a day. I'd like a chair that looks good enough to be on display all the time.

Does anyone have a Tripp Trapp? The back seems very low compared to other chairs? Do they genuinely tip over?

There’s only one high chair - the ikea one. Don’t waste money on anything else.

randomsabreuse · 22/06/2018 09:32

Hauck do a tripp trapp clone. Only thing it has tipped is me with the evil sticky out legs - don't put in a thoroughfare!

EllaNB · 22/06/2018 09:34

We have twins and have tried many high chairs. The Ikea chair is by far the best chair in my experience: I was dubious because of the price but it’s so much less hassle to clean. You can even pop it in the dish washer! We had other chairs with lots of fabric that were so much faff to clean.

I think I just accepted that children’s toys / items are not always going to be easy on the eye.

gothicsprout · 22/06/2018 09:38

We've got a Tripp Trapp. I prefer the lower back on it because my DD (16m) actually sits nicely in it, compared to others with higher backs we've used elsewhere that she slumps and slouches in.

Never had any concerns with it tipping over - there are extenders which you add to the feet when you've got the baby kit attached anyway, which give it a longer/more stable base.

That said, I think the IKEA one would be fine if you don't mind the look of it and the sticky out legs.

We have the oxo tot which is a lovely wooden highchair

Lindtnotlint · 22/06/2018 09:41

Tripp trapp doesn’t tip and is really comfortable for kids - much better than others once they can sit properly.
Get one second hand for price.

CluelessMummy · 22/06/2018 10:02

I bought a very stylish high chair that actually matched my dining furniture Blush But I'm not going to tell you the name of it because it was impossible to get clean and utterly shit in every way bar appearance. I lost my cool with it one day and swiftly replaced it with the IKEA chair. Best decision ever.

JoeElliotsMullet · 22/06/2018 11:09

Oh yes. The IKEA one. Best £12 spent ever.

The aesthetically pleasing ones stay aesthetically pleasing for approximately 0.0003 nanoseconds i.e. until it has had Weetabix smeared all over it in all the impossible-to-clean nooks and crannies. And when it sets, well...

Trust us. You do not need to spend £150 on a high chair that you will come to hate. You are perfectly within your rights to, of course, but just don't. Get one you can dismantle and bung in the dishwasher. And spend the other £138 on wine Grin

GummyGoddess · 22/06/2018 11:14

Have you considered a booster seat for your dining chairs instead? We have the mama's and papas baby bud one and dc1 much prefers it to the highchair.

I agree with others, the chair needs to be easy to clean above aesthetics as they get absolutely filthy! A mouldy stained chair won't look good. I haven't had the Ikea one but have tried it when eating at Ikea and would get it if I needed another.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/06/2018 11:57

@CanaBanana - I do understand why you want one that looks nice enough to be left out, but I would consider practicality first and foremost. You need something that is easily cleaned - and whilst you'd think that all high chairs would be designed to be easily cleaned, without too many little nooks and crannies to collect gunge and bits of food, I don't think that is the case - some designers seem to put form before function.

My dses are all grown up now, but I well remember many happy hours spent chipping hardened weetabix off our high chair!

Lazypuppy · 22/06/2018 13:01

We have chicco polly 2 start. Grey and we have it out all the time! We didn't like ikea on as back isn't high enough for our baby who is 5 months old.

This one also reclines so when she dozes off we can leave her to sleep.

RatRolyPoly · 22/06/2018 14:38

We have a Nuna Zaaz in almond.

Nuna Zaaz

I really like it actually, although there are some faffy nooks and crannies. Also it converts into an adjustable height normal chair (so no need for a booster seat once they're a toddler), and can also be used as a normal chair for an adult (up to 100kg I think), so good for an extra chair at parties. Mostly I just like the way it looks.

moreismore · 22/06/2018 14:41

Baby Bjorn high chair, we love ours and it’s v easy to fold quickly if you wanted that option. No straps to faff with and a detachable tray that goes in dishwasher. They are expensive new but good second hand ones for around £100 on eBay

Sunrise888 · 22/06/2018 14:44

I love our babyBjorn too - so easy to clean, stylish and folds down small. I got mine for £70 off eBay and they have good resale value.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 22/06/2018 14:46

We have a Tripp Trapp and I'm pretty confident that it won't tip over. I know you can never say never but my son is very active in it - scoots across the floor in it and it hasn't ever come close to tipping.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 22/06/2018 14:51

We have the oxo tot one too, I’ll admit it was a little bit annoying to clean when my DD was really little as food tends to get under the seat covers. It’s absolutly brilliant now that she’s 2 and she just uses it as a normal chair. I think it looks really nice and the tray/white parts have stayed very clean and don’t stain.

whatsyourusername · 22/06/2018 14:53

We have 2 Tripp Trapps. My 5 year old still loves hers (only uses the seat now and not the foot rest). Ours have never tipped over and I don't think they will. If you have concerns then use the plastic spare part thingys that come with it to stop it from tipping over!

MrsRolly · 22/06/2018 14:55

We have the trip trap, second hand so reasonable price and it will hold it's value to sell on when we are done. Pushes in to the table when not in use and LO has loved being able to sit at the table the whole time. Never had any concerns about it tipping and my LO slides it along the floor and isn't known for sitting still! The Ikea one is great if you have the room though and much cheaper.

TroubledLichen · 22/06/2018 15:04

Seriously when you’re cleaning the damn thing how it looks will drop so far down your list of priorities. Take it from someone that got the iCandy chair (as a gift) and raved about how awesome it looked, I especially loved the fact the you could dock the bouncer on the frame when DD was smaller. Now she’s 1 and we’ve replaced it with the Ikea as the amount of time I was spending cleaning it was ridiculous.

mynamechangemyrules · 22/06/2018 15:17

Tripp Trapp or ikea- there is no in between. FWIW, the Tripp Trapp lasts till they're teenagers, seriously, and is excellent for them to do homework on as it has a foot plate which is v v important for their motor skills rather than legs dangling. We have one for each of them, first one I bought second hand as couldn't face the cost, 2nd and 3rd I coughed it up as knew how good they were... If you pro-rated out the cost in terms of how much you'll use it, it's worth it.
But otherwise the ikea one is great for little ones and perfectly respectable to leave out!!

tenbob · 22/06/2018 17:08

We have the Stokke Steps which is far nicer than the Tripp Trap, and doesn't tip
It's £450 new but you can probably get one on eBay for around £150 if you don't need the newborn bouncer attachment
